Eternal Gifts for the Ones We Love: Bible Gift Ideas

Are you searching for a meaningful gift that goes beyond the material and points your loved ones to eternity? In a world filled with temporary treasures, nothing compares to giving an eternal gift that nurtures faith, inspires faith, and leaves a spiritual legacy that lasts long after the wrapping paper is gone.

An open Bible with a pen rests on a table decorated with flowers and a coffee mug. Text reads, "Eternal Gifts for the Ones We Love," celebrating the beauty of giving eternal gifts. Visit www.homewithgraceandjoy.com.

In this post, I’ll share Bible gift ideas that are truly eternal gifts for the ones we love. These are gifts with lasting spiritual impact that bring Scripture to life in everyday moments. These Bible gift ideas help us share the eternal value of God’s Word and His love with those we love so much.

Eternal Gifts for the Ones We Love

A closed black Bible, perhaps filled with success lessons, rests on a wooden table. In the background, a white lace table runner and green leafy garland add charm, while a gold candle holder peeks out from the left.

A Difference-Making Gifted Bible

Early in my Christian life, I was working at a Juvenile Probation and Detention Center. Many times I would go into the detention center area to either visit a kid or talk to the workers.

Two of the older women kind of spiritually adopted me. They shared God’s Word with me from a Bible that someone had left there. Since I was just starting to grow in my faith, I thought the Bible they shared was the most marvelous thing! Someone had written notes all through it.

I read it so much that when I quit working there, they gave me that Bible as a going away gift. I still have it!

Knowing what this Bible did for me, I wanted my grandkids to have the same experience.

I am paying it forward and growing spiritually in the process.

A Special Bible Gift Idea

An open book on a fringed cloth displays handwritten notes in its margins, capturing the insights of "Success Lessons in Nehemiah." A fabric bookmark nestles between pages rich with text and blue pen annotations, inviting reflection at a table brimming with study and wisdom.

These are just a few of the Bibles we have at home. Just like us, many people have multiple Bibles, in multiple versions. In fact, the Bible is still the best seller! However, it is also not read as often as it is purchased.

So what could make a Bible even more special so that it would make your loved ones want to dig into it a little more? A personal touch!

Several years ago, I heard someone on the radio sharing what they were doing for their grandchildren when they graduated from high school. They were reading through a Bible and making notes for them in the margins, then they would present it to them at graduation.

I loved the idea, so I bought Bibles for the girls.

1 – What You Will Need for These Eternal Gifts

Text in image reads: "This post may contain Amazon or other affiliate links for your convenience. This means that if you click on the link and purchase the item, I may receive a small commission at no extra charge to you. I only recommend products that have practical life applications or that I would purchase for myself. See my full disclosure on the website." The text is centered on a white background with
  • Get a Bible that is an easy to read version but true to the original context. You don’t want it to be too difficult to understand, so they can apply it to their lives. However, you want it to be accurate.
  • Fine point pens work best for writing on the pages. The pens linked below are the ones one of my granddaughters use, but any fine point pen will work.
  • Bible highlighters (in different colors) are great if you like to highlight certain areas. There are highlighters made specifically for Bibles now, so they do not bleed through the pages.
  • A Bible cover or nice tote bag will keep the Bible in better shape, since you will be carrying it around for a couple of years.

These items would also be great ideas to go along with the gift of the Bible. It is safe to say that not only will you use them as you make notes for your family member or friend, but they will probably use the same products.

2 – Steps in the Process

An open Bible revealing the table of contents, with various dates hand-written next to the names of books under the Old and New Testament sections. A symbol of life's eternal gifts, a woven textile is partially visible at the top right corner.
Completed Bible
  1. Pray each time you sit down to read God’s Word that He will show you what this specific grandchild or loved one will need to apply to their life, at the time when they will read it.
  2. Each day as you have your own personal Bible study, use the Bible you are trying to complete. Also take the Bible to church or any Bible studies you attend, taking notes in it on every occasion.
  3. Write your thoughts about the daily passages in a journal. Many times the Lord will speak through this process as well. Add any thoughts and notes to the gift Bible.
  4. Work on one Bible at a time (in order from the oldest grandchild to the youngest), and complete it before starting another one.
  5. Choose one Old Testament and one New Testament book to finish before moving onto other books of the Bible.
  6. Each time you finish one of the books of the Bible, put the date next to that book in the Table of Contents. This helps you keep up with which books of the Bible still need to be read.

3 – What to Write

  • Personal Reflections
    • Any life applications the Lord shares with you through a verse of scripture
    • What a verse meant to you in a specific season
    • How the Lord showed up in your life through a specific passage
    • Favorite verses and why they mean so much
  • Prayers Written for the Recipient
    • One-sentence prayers
    • Blessings
    • Personalized prayers for their character, faith, protection, future spouse, etc.
  • Life Lessons You Want to Pass Down
    • Faith Stories associated with certain scriptures
    • Family stories and testimonies
    • God’s faithfulness in hard times as well as the good times
  • Application Notes
    • What was going on in the passage
    • How the story or passage applies to their life
    • How to live out the scripture
    • Small devotion style notes
  • Milestone Notes
    • Special family memories tied to scriptures
    • Birthdays (Physical as well as Spiritual)
    • Baptisms
    • Graduations
  • Other Things to Add
    • Notes from sermons
    • Historical references
    • Personal notes about the recipient and what they were going through when you read a specific passage
    • If you start when the recipient is a small child, you can add their handprint to the page of certain scriptures. Here are a few to consider:
      • Jeremiah 29:11
      • Psalm 127:3
      • Jeremiah 1:5
      • Proverbs 22:6
      • Mark 10:14

What I Have Learned

A closed brown leather-bound book, perhaps containing I Corinthians, lies on a soft, pink fur surface. To its left is a small leafy green plant, and several brass candle holders are positioned above the book on the creamy white tablecloth background.
  • Because each girl has a different personality, the Lord gives me thoughts and lessons directed toward each one specifically in different ways.
  • He even gives me thoughts about current things going on in their lives as well as thing they may go through later.
  • He also speaks to me personally through the Words on the page.
  • I have learned that all scripture has meaning and application for us, but some inspirational Bible verses may stand out to you more than others, depending on what you need at the time. He can speak to us through different scripture each time we read His Word.

Seeing how the Holy Spirit speaks to us through the Bible is such a sweet reminder that God’s Word is alive! He speaks to us in the hard times and the good times.

Occasions to Give a Bible

A Bible can be given for many occasions, because it makes the perfect gift. In fact, you don’t even have to have a reason. Here are a few popular times Bibles are given as thoughtful gifts.

  • Graduation Gift
  • Birthday Gift
  • Baptism Gift
  • Christmas Gift
  • Wedding Gift
  • First Communion Gifts
  • New Mothers on Mother’s Day

Practically any occasion can be the right time to give the gift of a Bible.

If you get started early, you can give them something with eternal value with a special touch! Just like the man on the radio, I have been working on special graduation gifts for my granddaughters since they were little. Two of them are finished, and I am working on the third one.  I can’t think of anything better than eternal gifts for the ones we love.

If you are wondering, it takes approximately 2-3 years to finish one Bible. This of course is based on the time you can put into this eternal project and Bible study.

Why Gift a Bible: Psalm 119

Word cloud listing eternal gifts and benefits from Psalm 119, including comfort, happiness, strength, discernment, salvation, encouragement, peace, hope, light, understanding, purity, protection, wisdom, and guidance.

As I mentioned in the beginning, this gift is one with eternal value.  If you are ever looking for reasons to read the Bible, read Psalm 119. This is the longest chapter in the Bible, so I will highlight a few reasons mentioned.

  • 1 – Those who live by His Word are happy.
  • 9 – His Word will help you stay pure.
  • 11 – It will keep you from sinning.
  • 24 – It will guide you.
  • 25 – It is encouraging and life-giving.
  • 26 – It strengthens and carries you in times of grief.
  • 49 – It gives you hope.
  • 50 – It is comfort in your affliction.
  • 66 – It teaches good judgment and discernment.
  • 98 – It makes you wise.
  • 99 – It gives you insight.
  • 100 – It gives you understanding.
  • 105 – It lights your path and keeps you from stumbling.
  • 114 – It is your shelter and shield – your protection.
  • 155 – It leads you to salvation.
  • 165 – It brings abundant peace.

Who wouldn’t want these things for the ones they love most? These reasons alone are enough to turn anyone into a Bible lover.

Examples

An open book on a wooden table displays a page with floral illustrations and the text "May His Name Become Well Known in Israel," alongside Ruth Chapter One. Surrounding decor includes greenery and a fringed cloth.

Each week I post my Weekly Applications. These are examples of the notes I write in the Bibles for my granddaughters. There are several listed throughout the blog, just click on the “Weekly Applications” tab at the top. Here is a link to the page.

When it comes to giving gifts, nothing has more eternal significance than giving the gift of God’s Word. A Bible thoughtfully chosen, personally marked, and shared with prayer becomes more than a book. It becomes a legacy of faith, hope, and love that carries on through generations.

As you consider the people closest to your heart, remember that eternal gifts aren’t measured by price tags but by their power to draw others closer to Christ. May these Bible gift ideas and eternal gifts inspire you to give what truly matters, a gift that points loved ones to the everlasting hope we have in Jesus.

Want to Create an Eternal Gift of Your Own?

One of the most meaningful ways I’ve found to give an eternal gift is by reading through the Bible slowly, praying as you go, and making personal notes along the way, all with the intention of giving that Bible to a child, grandchild, or loved one in the future.

This is not something that happens overnight. It’s a beautiful, long-term project that unfolds over time – one or two chapters a day, one prayer at a time.

Coming Soon

In early 2026, I’ll be hosting a free online webinar where I’ll teach exactly how to do this: how to read through the Bible with purpose, take meaningful notes, and create a faith-filled keepsake that can be passed down for generations (a gift with eternal value).

If this idea has stirred your heart, I would love for you to join me.

Be sure you’re on my email list so you don’t miss registration details.
