A Popular Prayer
I am really curious how many of you have read the book, The Prayer of Jabez by Bruce Wilkinson. My husband’s brother gave him a copy back in 2001, and it seemed like everyone was talking about it. I read it many years ago and then again last year. The content is simple and taken from one small scripture:
“And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, ‘Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!’ So God granted him what he requested.” I Chronicles 4:10
So many times I have seen this as just asking for blessings, but it is so much more. When we are walking with the Lord, desiring to further His Kingdom, and trying not to bring harm to others, that is when we find ourselves receiving the blessings.
Many of you know that I am currently reading the book of Deuteronomy. This week I came across a verse that brought all of this to mind. See the similarities:
“If the Lord your God enlarges your territory as He swore to your fathers, and gives you all the land He promised to give them – provided you keep every one of these commands I am giving you today and follow them, loving the Lord your God and walking in His ways at all times – you are to add three more cities to these three.” Deut. 19:8-9
In these scriptures, it was very clear that the Israelites (just like us) had to do their part as well. Their hearts had to be right to want to obey, follow, and love the Lord while walking in His ways. That is when you experience true blessings!

My prayer is to have the right heart condition to pray this prayer with pure motives and love for the Lord. I hope you will join me in this effort.
