Beauty in the Cotton Patch – Encouraging and Kind Words

Saturday Morning Devotional – by Jay Sikes

Beauty in the Cotton Patch

Earlier this week, I took my 85 year old mom to a doctor’s appointment. It was just a follow-up, and all was good. Whenever I get her out, we also go out to eat. I always ask her what she is hungry for, food or ice cream. Most of the time she opts for food, but sometimes ice cream fits the bill.

The next question is always, “Where?”

She always responds, “Wherever you want to go.” Nine times out of ten, I will start driving to the restaurant farthest away, and before we get there, she has made a decision. That works for me, because I want to take her where she really wants to go.

This past week she said she wanted salad. I gave her some options, and she said, “Wherever you want to go.”

I know she loves the salad with strawberries and pecans at Cotton Patch, so away we went. She was pleased when we pulled up, and even more pleased with the salad. Several times while eating, she spoke about how good it was.

Encouraging and Kind Words

After we finished eating, we were proceeding to leave. Across the aisle from our table was a booth with two young ladies sitting in it. One of them leaned toward our table and said to my mom, “You are so pretty!”

Mom responded, “Oh my, I don’t even have any make-up on!”

The young lady said, “You’re still so pretty!”

I responded, “Yes she is!”

I had to step away for a second, and I am sure the conversation went to Mary Kay Cosmetics. Not only was Mom a pink Cadillac driving Sr. Director with Mary Kay, she used the products her whole life. Anyway, we both thanked her and left.

It made Mom’s day! It made mine too, to know that other people see Mom’s beauty. I was also very pleased to see a young lady make the effort to compliment an elderly woman and make her day. Kind words do make a difference!

  1. What a sweet story. It takes so little to be an encourager and make someone’s day with our words.
