How to Make Homemade Ice Cream Without A Churn

Who loves homemade ice cream? We are an ice cream family, and when it is homemade, that makes it even better. However, if you have ever had to churn ice cream, you know that it is not fun. I would love to share a few recipes that show how to make homemade ice cream without a churn.

With summer right around the corner, we tend to eat more ice cream. I have an easy countertop automatic ice cream maker, but it seems like it makes enough for one serving! Normally, we just buy a carton at the store. However, there are times when the girls are over that I like to make it a little more fun.

Cousins’ Camp

A few years ago, we had what we called, “Cousins’ Camp.” We had all three girls for a few days and planned lots of activities. One of those activities involved making homemade ice cream in baggies. It was fun, delicious, and messy, which is a great combination when entertaining kids.

In this picture, the girls had just made their own ice cream without using a churn. They used just a few ingredients, baggies, salt, and ice.

I found a website with the exact recipe and directions we used to make our ice cream. If you want to try this out, see the Homemade Ice Cream in a Baggie by 2 Little Hooligans.

On a side note, here they are eating ice cream for breakfast one morning in a tent they made. What happens at Cousins’ Camp stays at Cousins’ Camp until it gets posted on a blog a few years later.

If you are not up for all of that mess, here are a couple of recipes for homemade ice cream that I plan on making this weekend. They only require 3-5 ingredients and no churning. Besides the ingredients, you basically need a freezer, container to store the ice cream in, and a mixer of some sort – Stand Mixer or Hand Mixer.

I shared one of my favorite desserts involving ice cream in a post entitled, “What is So Great About Coffee?” This homemade ice cream would be wonderful as the base for that dessert.

If you make ice cream this weekend, please share the variation and method in the comments below. We would love to hear from you.

  1. Homemade ice cream is the best but as you say churning is no joke. My arms hurt just thinking about it ha ha! Love that you host cousins camp. My parents host Mimi camp every year and even though the kids are almost all tween and teenagers they still ask about it. It’s super sweet and I know your grands appreciate being able to make extra special memories at your house too. They’re totally adorable! Thanks so much for these recipes. They look so good! 1. Thanks so much! I need to do another Cousins’ Camp, but the older they get, the harder it is to coordinate it. Have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!
