Get in the Boat
Saturday Morning Devotional
Get in the Boat
Throughout the Bible, we find many stories involving boats. Looking at the disciples time with Jesus, we find many times that Jesus told them to get in the boat. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of getting in the boat.
It seems odd for me to be writing about the benefits of getting into a boat, because I am not really a boat person. That is probably because Jay is a more adventurous boat person than a relaxing boat person. He has had me in speed boats, a wild sailboat that seemed like we were going to slide right off of it and into the ocean, a deep sea fishing boat with a storm in the works, and even a ski boat that sank with us in it! Is there any wonder why I am a little uneasy about them? I do have to say that my prayer life was increased in each of those situations.
A while back, I was reading the Gospels, and a common theme kept coming up – getting in the boat. I think we can see some pretty amazing things when we look at these real life stories.
What You Will Find in the Boat
The Boat Gives Rest
“He said to them, ‘Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.’ For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. So they went away in the boat by themselves to a remote place,…” Mark 6:31-32
How many times have you found yourself exhausted from work, ministry, or life in general. Although these are all good things, we have to find time to rest and rejuvenate to be able to carry on and be at our best. The boat provided this needed rest for the disciples.
What boat is the Lord giving you for rest? Get in the boat and receive your rest!
The Boat Gives Protection
“Immediately He made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side…” Mark 6:45
“…Immediately He spoke with them and said, ‘Have courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’ Then He got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. They were completely astounded,” Mark 6:50-51
Although Jesus sent them out in the boat, they still experienced a storm and struggled. We can be right in the middle of God’s Will and still face storms and struggles. The most important thing is to remain in His Will. He told them not to be afraid, because he was with them. He brought peace and protection in the storm.
Are you in the middle of a storm or struggle right now? Remain in the boat! He will be there with you.
The Boat Gives Guidance
“One day He and His disciples got into a boat, and He told them, ‘Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake.’ So they set out, and as they were sailing He fell asleep. Then a fierce windstorm came down on the lake; they were being swamped and were in danger. ” Luke 8:22-24
He had already determined their destination before they left the shore; they were going to the other side. There may be storms along the way, but when we are in His Will, nothing can keep us from reaching our destination.
Has the Lord given you a dream or a vision that has had some roadblocks along the way? Stay in the boat! He will continue to guide you and get you to your destination. He is the One Who determined the destination in the first place.
On a side note, there are times the Lord may call you to step out of the boat of rest and protection and into faith. That is whole other devotional though.
As we enter into the summer months, take some time to really rest and rejuvenate. Get in the boat with the Lord, and let Him provide true rest, protection, and guidance. He will provide exactly what you need.

This is such a great devotional, Susan! Thank you for the gentle reminder to stay in the boat even when there are storms on the horizon and to also see it as a vessel for rest and not just as a means to get to the next goal or destination. I definitely need to hear that this week! Big hugs and thanks for always giving us your best, CoCo
I needed it also! I love the way He shows us exactly what we need! Hugs to you too!
So grateful for the boats that come my way. And I love that Colton Dixon song. I’ve had it on my favorites list for awhile now!
Amen!!!
