Life Applications and Lessons from the Book of I Samuel
Saturday Morning Life Applications (Vol. 87)
There are so many life applications and lessons from the book of I Samuel. Many people think that the Old Testament is obsolete, but that is simply not the case.
As we dive into the Old Testament book of I Samuel, let’s watch and listen for the life applications the Lord has for us. They will be there!
Life Applications and Lessons
“All Israel from Dan to Beer Sheba knew that Samuel was a confirmed prophet of the Lord.” I Samuel 3:20
- Last week we saw that Hannah was heart-broken before she had Samuel. We also saw that Penninah taunted her because of her barrenness. Now Hannah’s son, Samuel was a well known prophet in the land.
- Hannah must have been so proud of the way her son lived his life. I just wonder how Penninah felt about this.
- As hard as it is, when we are in situations that do not seem fair or we are being taunted by someone, we need to let the Lord handle it. He will do a much better job than we could ever imagine doing ourselves.
“When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the Ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that He may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies.” I Samuel 4:3
They had the right idea; they needed to include the Lord in their plans. However, they had corrupt leadership, and no one had stepped up to do anything about it.
- We should always consult the Lord when making decisions and plans.
- We may not be able to control our leadership, but we need to make our voices heard when we see corruption – at least make it heard in the voting booths.
- You can’t expect God’s favor and blessing when you are willfully living a corrupt lifestyle.
“When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! They took Dagon and put him back in his place. But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the Lord! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained.”
I Samuel 5:3-4
Why would they continue to worship a powerless, worthless, false idol? They just witnessed it’s powerlessness!
It is very easy to ask that question of these people, but we could very easily turn it around and ask the same question of ourselves.
Why do we continue to worship powerless, worthless false idols?
- Money
- Possessions
- Power
- Status
- Entertainment
I Samuel 7:1-12
Read all of these verses to get the full context.
“While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites.” I Samuel 7:10
The Philistines were much bigger than Israel, but God was much bigger than the Philistines!
- When we are facing unsurmountable circumstances, enemies, or obstacles, remember that the Lord is bigger.
- Learn from the Israelites – Get ready for battle!
- Get rid of all of the idols in your life. (v.3-4)
- Worship – “Pour out water to the Lord.” (v.6)
- Fast. (v.6)
- Confess sins (v.6)
- Make sacrifices for the Lord. (v.9)
- Give Him your offerings. (v.6,9,10)
- Remain in constant prayer. (v.5,8,9)

Life Applications and Lessons Resources
If you have joined me recently, these daily life applications from the Bible are examples of some of the comments I am writing in the Bibles I am giving to my grandchildren when they graduate from high school. Click here to see the post where I explain this eternal gift idea. I want to give them all the resources I can to use in today’s world!
The rose colored Bible is the one I am using for my youngest granddaughter, and I really love it! The brown study Bible is the one Jay uses for his personal Bible study.

Gosh this one has always been a tough one for me but I finally feel like I have some clarity. I’m going to read this again with your notes and add them to mine. They’re so helpful! Hugs, CoCo
There are so many good things in this book of the Bible. It seems like I say that every time we are in a new book. I guess they are all good! LOL
