Success Lessons in Nehemiah: Part 2
Life Applications and Lessons
As we continue our study, we see so many success lessons in Nehemiah. If we apply these lessons to all areas of our lives, we will definitely see the benefits.
I planned to share chapters 3 and 4 this week, but there are so many success lessons in both of these lessons that they need to stand on their own.
Let’s look at chapter 3 in the book of Nehemiah this week. The lessons in this chapter not only show us how to run a business or be successful in the work place, but they are good lessons for dealing with people in general.

Overview of the History
As you recall from Success Lessons in Nehemiah: Part 1, Nehemiah had heard the devastating news about the conditions of Jerusalem. As the cupbearer to King Artaxerxes, he requested a leave of absence (after praying about approaching the king) so he could go repair the walls of the city.
Because of the Lord’s favor upon him, the king granted his request. Not only did the king allow him to go, but he provided him with letters of traveling protection.
Nehemiah arrived at Jerusalem and privately investigated the condition of the city walls. As could be expected, he was met with mocking and opposition.
Success Lessons
Nehemiah 3:1
“The high priest Eliashib and his fellow priests began rebuilding the Sheep Gate. They dedicated it and installed its doors. After building the wall to the Tower of the Hundred and the Tower of Hananel, they dedicated it.” Nehemiah 3:1
- It was important to them to dedicate their work to the Lord. They made sure to dedicate every milestone to Him, the One Who supplied all of their needs and allowed them the success.
- Remember Who called you to your purpose and why! This will help you get through the hard times and push on.
- Give all of your work to Him. Work as to the Lord and not men.
Nehemiah 3:2-32
Instead of sharing the entire chapter, I will just share verse 2 as an example.
“The men of Jericho built next to Eliashib, and next to them Zaccur son of Imri built.”
Nehemiah 3:2
- Throughout this chapter, we see the phrases “Next to” and “Beside.” They are written in almost every verse! It was vital that the people worked together with a common purpose in which they believed. This would help them when they faced negative feelings and opposition.
- Community is so important! In our businesses, work places, and even in our personal lives, if we don’t have a good community, we will get discouraged easier than when we have a good support system.
- When things get tough in any type of job, it is the people around you who can help you keep going. The community will help you finish the assignment successfully.
Nehemiah 3:5
“Beside them the Tekoites made repairs, but their nobles did not lift a finger to help their supervisors.” Nehemiah 3:5
- How sad that the nobles felt they were too good to do the work! Now their part of the miraculous rebuilding of the wall is recorded in history – their part was nothing!
- Don’t ever feel like you are too good to do a job the Lord has called you to do.
- Leaders must lead by example!
Nehemiah 3:6-32
Just like the verses above, these lessons are mentioned throughout the rest of the chapter. Verses 6 and 7 are examples.
“Joiada son of Paseah and Meshullam son of Besodeiah repaired the Old Gate. They built it with beams and installed its doors, bolts, and bars. Next to them the repairs were done by Melatiah the Gibeonite, Jadon the Meronothite, and the men of Gibeon and Mizpah, who were under the authority of the governor of the region west of the Euphrates River.” Nehemiah 3:6-7
- They all had a common purpose and mission, but they each had a specific assignment.
- No one was more important than the others. It took them all to do their part to make it happen.
It is the same for us! As a team, we all have a job to do to fulfill the purpose. To be successful, everyone does their part. Everyone is important!
- Our businesses
- In the work place
- Our homes
- In our churches
Keep doing your part and what the Lord has gifted you to do!
Nehemiah 3:20-30
Lessons in verses 20-30
- They all worked in the areas closest to their families and homes.
- They had a vested interest in the work, because it affected their families’ safety.
- In leadership positions, look for ways to make the tasks meaningful for people.
- Find ways to make your own work meaningful.
- If you start to lose your motivation, go back and remember why you are doing it. “Remember your why!”

Love this series so much, Susan, and this one is perfectly timed with everything that has happened this year so far. Thank you for the gentle reminder that we all have a part to play and no one thing/person or community is more important than another because it’s all part of our purpose and His divine plan. I definitely needed that reminder this week. Big hugs and thanks for always giving us your best, CoCo
