Overview of the History
In Success Lessons in Nehemiah: Part 1, Nehemiah requested a leave of absence as the king’s cupbearer to go repair the walls of the city.
The king granted his request and provided him with letters of traveling protection. When Nehemiah arrived at Jerusalem he investigated the condition of the city walls and was met with mocking and opposition.
In Success Lessons in Nehemiah: Part 2, Nehemiah and the people dedicated their work to the Lord and began working to repair the city walls. Even in the midst of the opposition, the people had a vested interest in the work and worked together for success.
Success Lessons
Nehemiah 4:1-3
“When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became furious. He mocked the Jews…” Nehemiah 4:1-3
- When people feel threatened, their first defense is usually to put people down and discourage them.
- When you are doing good work for the Lord, don’t be surprised if people try to discourage you. They don’t get it.
- If you find people putting you down, don’t let it discourage you. Know that it is an issue with their character, not you.
- If you find yourself putting people down or getting angry, examine the reason. It could be that you are feeling threatened in some way.
Nehemiah 4:6
“So we rebuilt the wall until the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, for the people had the will to keep working.” Nehemiah 4:6
- They had success because of their will, determination, and unity.
- They were all working with the same goal in mind.
- Determination and a strong will to succeed go a long way.
- Work together with others who have the same goals and determination. Stay accountable.

Nehemiah 4:7-9
“When Sanballat, Tobiah, and the Arabs, Ammonites, and Ashdodites heard that the repair to the walls of Jerusalem was progressing and that the gaps were being closed, they became furious. They all plotted together to come and fight against Jerusalem and throw it into confusion. So we prayed to our God and stationed a guard because of them day and night.” Nehemiah 4:7-9
- The opposition was losing their power, and that made them angry.
- When you start to succeed, expect some sort of opposition. Don’t let it throw you into confusion.
- Always keep in communication with the Lord. Let Him guide you and take care of any issues that may arise.
Nehemiah 4:11-12
“And our enemies said, ‘They won’t realize it until we’re among them and can kill them and stop the work.’ When the Jews who lived nearby arrived, they said to us time and again, ‘Everywhere you turn, they attack us.’” Nehemiah 4:11-12
- The enemy will not stop!
- He does not want you to succeed or the Lord’s work to be accomplished.
- Don’t let him win. turn it over to the Lord.
Nehemiah 4:14
“After I made an inspection, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people, ‘Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the great and awe-inspiring Lord, and fight for your countrymen, your sons and daughters, your wives and homes.'” Nehemiah 4:14
- Nehemiah called to mind the reason they were going through all of this in the first place.
- Again, remember the who and why behind what you are doing! Of course we want to follow what the Lord calls us to do, but are there things you are doing for your family?
- When your “Why” is big enough, nothing will stop you from succeeding in what the Lord equips you to do.
Nehemiah 4:16-20
“From that day on, half of my men did the work while the other half held spears, shields, bows, and armor. The officers supported all the people of Judah,” Nehemiah 4:16
“Wherever you hear the sound of the ram’s horn, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us!” Nehemiah 4:20
- They were armed and prepared to handle the opposition.
- Do your part, but let the Lord do His part as well.
- Put on the full armor of God each day, but let Him fight your battles.

Wonderful post, Susan! Nehemiah is full of such practical wisdom!
Thank you! I love the book of Nehemiah!
I needed this so much today, Susan! I’ve been doubting myself over something that I specifically feel called to do because I have a few people in my inner circle that either can’t see the wider vision or don’t want to and gah I’ve felt stuck for WEEKS. Thank you for reminding me that His ways and dreams are always better than our own even if the people surrounding us don’t see in the same way we do! Big hugs and thanks for always giving us your best, CoCo
Hugs and prayers for His guidance in these areas!!!
