Success Lessons in Nehemiah: Part 6
Life Applications and Lessons
The book of Nehemiah teaches us so many real life lessons. There are many success lessons in Nehemiah as well.

Many of the lessons this week deal with blessings from obedience and curses and/or logical consequences from disobedience. Let’s see some of the success lessons in part 6 of this series.

Success Lessons in Nehemiah
Nehemiah 9:2-3
“Those of Israelite descent separated themselves from all foreigners, and they stood and confessed their sins and the iniquities of their ancestors. While they stood in their places, they read from the book of the law of the Lord their God for a fourth of the day and spent another fourth of the day in confession and worship of the Lord their God.”
Nehemiah 9:2-3
- The law pointed out to them the changes that needed to be made. They had two choices:
- Repent and follow the Lord and receive blessings
- Keep doing their own thing and receive curses
- We have the same choices to make – blessings or curses.
- Blessings and curses can simply be our own logical consequences.
- True success will come as blessings!

Nehemiah 9:17, 19, 20
“They refused to listen and did not remember your wonders You performed among them. They became stiff-necked and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt.
But You are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love, and You did not abandon them.” Nehemiah 9:17
“You did not abandon them in the wilderness because of your great compassion.
During the day the pillar of cloud never turned away from them, guiding them on their journey. And during the night the pillar of fire illuminated the way they should go.
Nehemiah 9:19
“You sent Your good Spirit to instruct them. You did not withhold Your manna from their mouths, and You gave them water for their thirst.” Nehemiah 9:20
- Even when we sin and turn against Him, He loves us and does not abandon us.
- We may still have consequences for disobedience, but He stays with us through them.
- Even in the times that we turn against Him, He guides us back to His path. He wants us to succeed.

This is one of my daily scriptures! I love motivational quotes, but this scripture is better than any “success” quote I have ever read!
Nehemiah 10:31
“When the surrounding peoples bring merchandise or any kind of grain to sell on the Sabbath day, we will not buy from them on the Sabbath or a holy day. We will also leave the land uncultivated in the seventh year and will cancel every debt.” Nehemiah 10:31
- It wasn’t that they couldn’t buy and/or trade with non-believing nations at all. They just needed to follow God’s commands and guidelines in their businesses.
- They were determined not to conduct business with the surrounding people on the Sabbath Day or holy days.
- Know ahead of time what guidelines and boundaries you need to have in place to honor the Lord in your business and stick to it. He will bless you in this. (Think about the convictions of Chick-Fil-A and Hobby Lobby. No one can say that they have not been blessed for sticking to what they believe!)
- Consult the Lord in these matters, follow His leading, and set your business boundaries accordingly.
- They also turned back to the Lord and followed His commands in regards to debt and money.
- Let the Lord rule over your finances, and give to Him what is His.
- Give your first fruits to Him before everything else, even in your business.

Join us next week as we continue to look at more success lessons and principles from the book of Nehemiah. They are priceless!
Please join us as we read the Word each week and share more faith, family and food ideas.

Nehemiah is full of good nuggets. I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite book to read, but I appreciate those books that don’t get as much attention. They have so much value. I loved your success lessons.
Thank you so much! I enjoyed going through Nehemiah.
This is such a good series, Susan. I’ve read these verses so many times but you have a gifted way of making the words applicable to today and I always learn so much from you. Thanks for giving us your best, sweet friend, even when the gentle reminders hit really close to home, Big hugs, CoCo
