Life Applications and Lessons from the Book of Colossians

  • Paul and Timothy were praying for the faithful Church at Colossae.
  • They specifically prayed for the Church to:
    • Be filled with the knowledge of the Lord’s Will
    • To have spiritual wisdom and understanding
  • We should pray for others and ourselves to receive these same spiritual qualities.
A Bible verse from James 1:5, in brown text on a soft beige textured background, reads: "Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God - Who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly - and it will be given to him." Life Applications can be found at the website URL below.

  • Did you catch the 2 little words at the beginning – “so that?” They were Praying verse 9 SO THAT the Church (the people) would:
    • Walk worthy of the Lord
    • Be fully pleasing to Him
    • Bear fruit in every good work
    • Grow in the knowledge of God
    • Be strengthened with all power (according to His glorious might – not their own)
  • They wanted them to do the things in verses 10 and 11 SO THAT they would have…
    • Great endurance
    • Patience
    • Be able to give thanks to the Father with a joyful heart
    • Share in the saints’ inheritance in the light
  • When you break it down like that, it makes you want to refer back to verse 9 and start praying!

Verse 9
“… We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding,”
Colossians 1:9

Inspirational quote on a beige background with soft leaf shadows. Text reads: "Rejoice always, pray constantly, give thanks in everything; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." Discover more life applications at homewithgraceandjoy.com. I Thessalonians 5:16-18.

  • “Treasures” of wisdom and knowledge! We spend so much time, effort, and brain power to get human knowledge, but how much time and effort are will willing to put forth to gain spiritual wisdom and knowledge? They are worth so much more!
  • Treasures are valuable! When we think of the Lord’s unlimited treasures, I don’t even think we can imagine what all is available to us when we seek Him.
  • We should be seeking them diligently.
  • “In Him” are where we find these treasures! They are hidden in Him.
  • The closer we grow to Christ, the more we know Him intimately, the more of the treasures we will find.
A beige background showcases a quote from Matthew 13:44 about the kingdom of Heaven being like a treasure in a field. The brown text is framed by a floral design, offering life applications for everyday faith. Below is the website link: www.homewithgraceandjoy.com.

Let’s seek the Lord and His treasures of wisdom and knowledge like we would sell out to buy land with secret treasure on it!

Colossians is one of my favorite books of the Bible. Thanks for sharing.

  3. There’s a lot of good stuff in this post!
Whenever the subject of God’s will for our lives comes up, I always first think of 1 Thess. 5:18, which you quoted in this post. It’s His will for our lives that we find something to be thankful for!
Also, nice to meet you. I love your idea of sharing what you learned from your Grace and Joy! One of my daughters’ middle names is Joy; and if I had it to do all over again, I’d work Grace into one of their names for sure!

    1. Thank you so much! It is so nice to meet you too! Two of my granddaughters have the middle names, Grace and Faith. I love those names!

  4. Excited to dive into Colossians with you, Susan! I was up this morning at 430 googling something completely random because I couldn’t figure out answer. I actually start a lot of my mornings that way because it drives me bananas when I can’t figure something out. So I definitely needed the reminder to seek divine wisdom more than I seek human wisdom. Sending you hugs and thank yous for always giving us your best. I love this series, CoCo

    1. I need to do a better job of starting out that way! I tend to get trapped in the phone early on.😔
