Collage of Easter-themed images: a hymn book on a piano, a white church building, a car radio displaying a Christian song, and an open hymn book with a candle. Central text reads, "The Best Worship Songs for Easter." Website at the bottom.

There are actually so many great worship songs that celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the new life He offers. It is hard to narrow them all down, but here are some of the top worshipful Easter songs, in no particular order.

Just a note: If you don’t have a paid YouTube subscription, you will need to watch the 5 second ad before the music video plays. They are really short.

#4 Song – Were You There?

“Were You There?” by Johnny Cash

An open hymnal book on a wooden table features Christian songs like "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" and "Were You There?" A gold-colored candle holder with green leaves peeks in from the top right corner, while a fringed cloth lies beneath, creating an inviting atmosphere.

Song Lyrics

“Were you there when they crucified my Lord?”

I didn’t realize there were so many versions of this song. Not all of them have my favorite verse:

“Were you there when He rose up from the grave?” – This is my favorite lyric in the song, and yet I found that many of the songs either didn’t have this verse in them, or it was changed a little.

“Amazing Grace, My Chains are Gone” by Chris Tomlin

If you are not familiar with this song, Chris Tomlin wrote it for the movie Amazing Grace, which was about John Newton. Newton wrote the song, “Amazing Grace” from his own personal experience.

Chris Tomlin didn’t want to change “Amazing Grace,” but the Lord laid the additional lyrics on his mind since the movie dealt with slavery. It is a powerful song!

Song Lyrics

“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost, but now I’m found – was blind, but now I see.”

    1. Thank you for sharing this! I was not familiar with that song, but I pulled it up on YouTube. Those are beautiful lyrics!

  2. That is quite a list, some of those I would not have thought of, it’s so long since I’ve heard or sung them. Modern worship songs cannot compare. One song I would add is the Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah. It’s usually only heard at Christmas, but Handel wrote it for Easter.

Sooo many good songs! Thanks for sharing. I love the spirit that music brings.

  4. What a nice list! I think the best Easter songs are the ones that make you feel a connection to the Lord. I love that you included the traditionally-Christmas “Mary Did You Know?” because I’ve been reminded of late to make more of a connection between Easter and Christmas! Thank you for sharing this post with all of us at the Will Blog for Comments #60 linkup! Looking forward to seeing what you’ll share at #61, too–it opens next week. Hope your week is a great one. 🙂
