The Best Bread Pudding Recipe: Easy and Delicious

Many years ago I came across the best bread pudding recipe! I was at a church potluck, so I asked the lady (Peggy) for the recipe and for permission to share it.

A collage of four images features Bread Pudding: close-ups of golden, baked bread pudding, a serving on a white plate, and a decorative sign in the background. Text reads "The Best Bread Pudding" and "www.homewithgraceandjoy.com".

Since then, I have made this bread pudding recipe numerous times, and someone always asks for the recipe. It is literally the best bread pudding ever!

You can break these simple instructions into two parts:

Bread Pudding

Vanilla Sauce Topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Cut or crumble the bread into small cubes. Place the bread cubes in a greased 10X13 baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, mix 4 eggs, 2 cups of sugar, 1 stick of melted butter, and the milk together well.
  4. Pour the mixture over the bread, and bake uncovered for 30 minutes.
  5. Mix together the topping ingredients.
  6. When the bread mixture has been baking for 30 minutes, pour the topping ingredients over the top of it, and put it back into the oven for 15-30 minutes, until golden brown.

Notes and Tips

  • I use white bread, but you can use any leftover bread you have, including French bread, sourdough bread, hot dog buns, hamburger buns, or wheat bread. Many people use stale bread, but I use whatever I have available, which is usually fresh bread.
  • Use the back of a spoon to push the bread down slightly into the egg mixture. Make sure all of the bread is soaked.
  • A deep baking dish is best for this recipe. The bread mixture tends to expand quite a bit.
  • I recommend putting a baking sheet on the bottom rack of your oven to catch any drips.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Optional Ingredients and Ideas

Serving this warm bread pudding just as it is when it comes out of the oven is my favorite way to serve it. However, if you want to change it up a little, here are a few suggestions:

  • Add chocolate chips.
  • Citrus zest added in will give it a completely different taste.
  • Sprinkle with ground cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice in the fall.
  • Drizzle with caramel sauce.
  • Pour a little heavy cream over it before serving it.
  • Serve with vanilla ice cream.
  • Add a spoonful of heavy whipping cream to the top of each serving.
