Life Applications and Lessons from the Book of Titus: Part 1

Life Applications and Lessons (Vol. 118)

Titus is a small little book in the Bible, but it is filled with so many lessons we can apply to our lives. Here are a few life applications and lessons from the book of Titus, chapters 1 and 2.

An open Bible on a wooden surface displays “Titus” and decorative script, surrounded by a pen and cloth. Text reads: “Life Applications and Lessons from Titus,” sharing wisdom from the Book of Titus for everyday living.

All of this week’s verses are about the examples we set before others – believers and non-believers. Let’s take a look at some of the scriptures and see how we can apply them to our lives.

Life Applications and Lessons from the Book of Titus

“As an overseer of God’s household, he must be blameless, not arrogant, not hot-tempered, not an excessive drinker, not a bully, not greedy for money, but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, righteous, holy, self-controlled, holding to the faithful message as taught, so that he will be able both to encourage with sound teaching and to refute those who contradict it.” Titus 1:7-9

  • Paul is sharing what the character and actions of an elder in the church should be.
  • Leaders in the church and outside of the church are held to a high standard, because they lead and have influence on others.
  • Whether we are leaders or lay people, the character traits Paul listed are still good traits for all of us. We can strive to have these characteristics in our everyday lives.
    • Blameless
    • Not arrogant
    • Not hot-tempered
    • Not an excessive drinker
    • Not a bully
    • Not greedy
    • Hospitable
    • Loving what is good
    • Sensible
    • Righteous
    • Holy
    • Self-controlled
    • Holding to the faithful message
Text on a soft, glowing pastel background reads: “Not many should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we will receive a stricter judgment.” James 3:1. Explore more Life Applications and Lessons from Titus at the website below.

“They claim to know God, but they deny Him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good work.” Titus 1:16

  • We represent the Lord in the way that we act.
  • Our actions need to match our faith.

Do you remember the song, What if I Stumble by DC Talk? I love the way it begins with this powerful quote!

“The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips and then walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.” Brennan Manning

“In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not slaves to excessive drinking. They are to teach what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, to be self-controlled, pure, workers at home, kind, and in submission to their husbands, so that God’s word will not be slandered.” Titus 2:3-5

Have you heard MercyMe’s song, Dear Younger Me? That is exactly what these verses make me think of.

  • This is not necessarily talking about “elderly” women (whatever that is), but women who have experienced life and learned from it.
  • We learn so much about ourselves and life as we go through trials and situations.
  • Going through life is part of the learning process, but imagine getting a letter from your older self during those times. After the disbelief, it would probably be pretty encouraging.
  • We have the opportunity to share the knowledge and wisdom we have gained with others who may be going through the very things we had to go through, even our sins and mistakes.
  • Many times it is not about age at all. Young people can set an example for others as well.
A quote from 1 Timothy 4:12 appears over a background of white silk fabric, reading: “Don’t let anyone despise your youth...in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.” Discover life applications and lessons alongside the website link at the bottom.

“Slaves are to submit to their masters in everything, and to be well-pleasing, not talking back 10 or stealing, but demonstrating utter faithfulness, so that they may adorn the teaching of God our Savior in everything.” Titus 2:9-10

When I read these verses, I don’t think of “slavery” in our society, but more like authority. Although Paul may be talking about literal slavery, when I apply this to my life, I think of the work place or governmental authority. These are my take aways.

  • Submit to all authority.
  • Be well pleasing.
  • Have a good attitude.
  • Don’t steal from the company, not even with your time.
  • The way we work and the attitude we have while working is a testimony.
  • We are to wear (put on intentionally) the teaching of God.
  • The way we behave in the work place is either a display of Who God is or it discredits us.

“He gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a people for His own possession, eager to do good works.” Titus 2:14

  • Great News – We are His!
  • He paid for us with His own blood to get us out of a state of lawlessness. Now we can be with Him instead.
  • Many people want to be their own person and not “belong” to anyone. We will either belong to the enemy who wants to harm us, or to the One Who paid for us out of love!
  • This should make us want to live a Godly life for Him.
Set against a beige background with a white arch, the center displays the profound quote: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.” - John 3:16. The heart behind symbolizes faith's life applications.

There was definitely a common theme in the first two chapters of Titus. Again, it is all about our character and the examples we set before others.

Next week we will take a look at Titus chapter 3. I hope you will join me.
