Life Applications and Lessons from the Book of I John
I John 1:1-3
“What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have observed and have touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life – that life was revealed, and we have seen it and we testify and declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to us – what we have seen and heard we also declare to you, so that you may also have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.”
I John 1:1-3
- John and the other disciples could testify to Jesus being real, to His miracles, His teachings, His death, and most of all, His resurrection because they were there.
- They experienced all of those things and saw it all with their own eyes.
- They each had a personal encounter with Jesus.
- We can also testify to these things, because we have also had an encounter with Him.
- Our encounters with Christ may not have been a physical one like the disciples experienced, but they are just as real and as personal!

I John 2:1-2
“My little children, I am writing you these things so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father – Jesus Christ the Righteous One. He Himself is the Atoning Sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours, but also for those of the whole world.”
I John 2:1-2
- When we sin, Jesus pleads our case to the Father. He is our Advocate!
- Many times our sin can cause us to doubt our salvation, but there is much comfort in this verse.

I John 3:14, 17, and 21
“We know that we have passed from death to life because we love our brothers and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death.”
I John 3:14
- Love is the evidence of our salvation, especially when we love when it is hard to do so.
“If anyone has this worldโs goods and sees a fellow believer in need but withholds compassion from himโhow does Godโs love reside in him?”
I John 3:17
- Giving and sharing is evidence of God’s love within us.
“Dear friends, if our hearts donโt condemn us, we have confidence before God…”
I John 3:21
- When we follow His commands, we don’t condemn ourselves (as much). This leads to more confidence with God.

I John 4:20-21
“If anyone says, โI love God,โ and yet hates his brother or sister, he is a liar. For the person who does not love his brother or sister whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And we have this command from Him: The one who loves God must also love his brother and sister.”
I John 4:20-21
This is basic logic:
- God is love.
- If we have God’s Spirit within us, then love is within us.
- If His love is within us, that is what will come out and be evident to others.
- If we do not have Him within us, hatred will show instead of love.
Do you have His love in your life? This is the kind of love that:
- Allows us to love in hard situations
- Allowed Him to go to the cross and die for the very ones who spat upon Him and flogged Him! That is real love!
This is convicting! When I think about it, I have a hard time with the people who hurt my son’s feelings on the playground one day in 5th grade! That is not a very good representation of His love!

I John 5:4-5
“…because everyone who has been born of God conquers the world. This is the victory that has conquered the world: our faith. Who is the one who conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?”
I John 5:4-5
- This is how we conquer the world – with our faith and belief in Jesus.
- Our faith helps us conquer the hard things in life and get through them.
- I believe it does so much more that we don’t even see or recognize.
- In the end, our faith is what will physically conquer the world as we leave it and enter into Heaven!

As we read His Word, I literally pray that we will see how It applies to us. Let’s seek His instruction and put it into action.
Let’s allow the Lord to pour His love through us and into others. Let’s try to love like Jesus!
Please share any encouragement and lessons you learned this week as you read the Bible. I would love to hear your thoughts.
