Spiritual Peace from a Cypress Tree

Have you ever had a favorite tree? I have always loved the look of cypress trees, but what if I told you that you could experience spiritual peace from a cypress tree?

A tall cypress tree stands in a grassy yard next to a wooden fence and shed. Overlaid text reads: "Devotional Peace from a Cypress Tree. www.homewithgraceandjoy.com".

Our Cypress Tree

When we built our house many years ago, we built on what used to be a hayfield. There were no trees whatsoever! We planted several trees that year, but my special request was a cypress tree.

A green cypress tree with feathery, needle-like leaves stands in a grassy yard, evoking spiritual peace amid a wooden fence and small building beneath a partly cloudy sky.

I guess I fell in love with them when we visited Caddo Lake many years ago. There is something about the dark green feathery look of the leaves that makes them look mysterious and majestic at the same time.

We planted that small little cypress tree back in 2002, and it has grown to tower over everything on the property.

Some of the Benefits of the Cypress Tree

As most trees do, our cypress tree has many great purposes. It:

  • Provides a home for many birds, including little hummingbirds each year.
  • Gives us a place to rest in the shade when we are working in the backyard on a hot summer day.
  • Is a landing spot for locusts to shed their skin.
  • Provides the best spot in the area for large black birds to use as a lookout tower (Can you see it?)

  • Allows Ally a place to cool off when she is waiting for me to go to the She Shed
  • Is a place to hang a Dynatrap to keep our yard safe from mosquitos.
  • Brings about spiritual peace (see below).

There are many great benefits to this tree, and it is absolutely beautiful!

Spiritual Peace

Since we know that the Lord is the Creator of all things, you can literally see Him and His lessons everywhere. That is the case with this tree. The Lord has spoken to me many times and has given me peace through this tree.

My 3-Part Cypress Testimony

#1 – The Jacob Tree

I call the cypress tree in our backyard my “Jacob Tree,” because of the way the Lord gave both of us peace one day.

Without going into personal details, I will tell you that Jacob was going through a really rough time. He had such a desire to have children, but at the time, he didn’t think it would happen.

I was in my She Shed having my quiet time one Saturday morning, and had been really praying for Jacob. I was reading the book of Isaiah, the 55th chapter, and read the verse:

A green Cypress Tree stands in the background with a white quote box in front. The quote is Isaiah 55:13, describing cypress and myrtle plants replacing thornbushes and briers as a sign for the Lord.

As soon as I read that verse, I looked up, which happened to be out a window, and there was the cypress tree. The Lord gave me peace for Jacob’s situation, and I called him immediately. We had a nice chat about God’s provision, peace, and of course the cypress tree!

If you know our story, you know that he did have a sweet little girl before he passed away. What a blessing he got to experience!

The Lord turned his trials/thorns into a blessing/cypress.

#2 – Comfort through the Cypress

A small cypress tree with red-brown autumn leaves stands in a sunlit yard, radiating spiritual peace. A house, wooden fence, and another tree are in the background. The grass is light brown, and a hammock rests to the right of the tree.
It turns red in the winter. It has really grown since this picture!

One day after Jacob passed away, I was having my quiet time and struggling with grief. As the Lord would have it, again I was reading the book of Isaiah, and wouldn’t you know it – I was on chapter 55.

As soon as I read verse 13, a special peace came over me. I immediately recalled the way the Lord answered Jacob’s prayer, and I knew that He would be with us now.

As you probably know, grief isn’t really something you go through and are finished with it. It will always be. However, the Lord will turn those thorns of grief into a thriving cypress – Beauty from Ashes!

Did you catch that? Even in this verse about the Lord turning our hard times to beauty, “righteous trees planted by the Lord” are mentioned!

Isn’t He amazing?

#3 – One Day

One day the Lord will take all of the thorns of this life and replace them with cypresses.

It all started with a tree!

“The Lord God caused to grow out of the ground every tree pleasing in appearance and good for food, including the tree of life in the middle of the garden, as well as the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” Genesis 2:9

However, when sin entered in, so did the thorns (physically and metaphorically).

“The ground is cursed because of you. You will eat from it by means of painful labor all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.” Genesis 3:17-18

At that time, the tree was hidden and guarded, but ONE DAY…

We will get to see the Tree of Life. It heals completely, and there will no longer be a curse.

A Bible verse from Revelation 22:2-3 is displayed in a white text box, overlaying a blurred outdoor background with green cypress tree branches and a grassy area.

NO more thorns!

A Little Research

I wanted to see a little more about Isaiah 55:13 and the cypress, so I went to Google. 🙂 This is what it said:

“The cypress tree is mentioned in the Bible, particularly in Isaiah and Hosea, symbolizing God’s restoration, endurance, and life-giving nature. In biblical symbolism, the cypress represents hope, strength, and spiritual steadfastness, drawing parallels to God’s eternal nature and promises.” (From the article “Bible Study: Is the Cypress Tree Mentioned in the Bible?” on the Christian Pure website)

My cypress tree may not be anything like the ones mentioned in the Bible, who knows? All I know is that the Lord has sure used it to bring me peace.

Are there things in your life that the Lord has used to bring you peace and comfort? I would love to hear about them.

If you are going through hard times right now, I would love to pray for you. Let me know how I can pray for you, and let’s watch the Lord turn those thorns to cypresses!
