Summary of the Book of Jonah Chapter Three

Chapter three is all about Jonah’s second chance. Aren’t you glad that our Lord is the God of 2nd chances?

1“Then the Word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: 2′Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.'”

  • Jonah got a second chance to obey the Lord.
  • We don’t always get a second chance in every situation. When we do, we need to act on it.

“Jonah obeyed the Word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began by going a dayโ€™s journey into the city, proclaiming, ‘Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.'”

  • Jonah learned from his mistakes and followed the Lord’s calling.
  • His mission wasn’t an easy task. He had to put forth time, effort, and set aside his pride to preach to his enemies.
  • Learning from our mistakes may not be easy, but it is the best path forward.

Jonah 3:5-8

5 “The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. When Jonahโ€™s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh: ‘By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence.'”

  • Jonah had a successful mission.
  • The whole nation of Nineveh repented and had a revival! This would have been a complete 180 turn around.
  • The king of Nineveh called for the nation to repent and go into a time of fasting and prayer.
  • Repentance in our lives is not just admitting we have sin in our lives. It is completely turning from it – doing a 180!
  • Leaders can have a huge spiritual impact on the people they influence. Who are you a leader to? Who do you influence?

Jonah 3:9-10

9“‘Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.’ 10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, He relented and did not bring on them the destruction He had threatened.”

  • As evil as the people of Nineveh were, God could still change them.
  • It is never too late to share God’s message, and no one is too far gone to receive it.
  • God has a will and a plan for all of us – even our enemies!
Text quote on a beige painted background reads: โ€œI tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in Heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.โ€ Luke 15:7, as seen in Jonah Chapter Three.

One More Take Away from Jonah Chapter Three

Jonah had a choice to obey the Lord or not. The Lord could have used another person to take His message to Nineveh. I know the message was for Nineveh, but the Lord had a message for Jonah as well. I am glad he didn’t miss out on the mission.

The Lord has a will and a plan for all of us. However, He did not make us to be robots but to have free will. How many blessings have we missed out on by refusing to answer His call?

A quote from Isaiah 6:8 appears in a soft pink box on a light cream background, echoing the spirit of Jonah Chapter Three: โ€œThen I heard the voice of the Lord asking: Who will I send?... I said: Here I am. Send me.โ€ Website: homewithgraceandjoy.com.

  1. Amen! Not everyone gets a second chance. When we see we have one, we should jump on it! I also love how this shows true repentance can change God’s mind.

  2. Having been the recipient of a second chance, I am so grateful our God is merciful and gracious. Like Jonah, may I (we) learn from our mistakes (aka, sins) and walk in obedience to God’s Word.

  3. I’m so happy I saw your life lesson today. I too have had a second chance, praise God for his mercies anew each morning.
