Nuggets of Grace: Leaving a Spiritual Legacy

Do you ever wonder what kind of legacy you will leave your family? I am not talking about an inheritance or physical items to pass down but about leaving a spiritual legacy.

Not too long ago, I was reading I Peter, and when I got to chapter 1, verse 12, my father-in-law came to mind. I don’t know if he was aware or not, but all along he was leaving a spiritual legacy.

Nuggets of Grace in I Peter

I Peter is one of the many places that Peter taught about the Gospel and holy living.

Think about all that he had witnessed and lived through. He had so much wisdom and experience, especially after the whole rooster incident, and he wanted to share it with others.

Don’t we do the same thing?

An open Bible on a wooden table displays the beginning of 1 Peter, symbolizing a lasting spiritual legacy. Nearby are brass candlesticks with white candles, greenery, a white pitcher, and a fringed runner. Hand-lettered text reads “imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.”.

If you read through the book of I Peter (which is only 5 chapters), you will see that Peter reinforced over and over the lessons he wanted the believers to get.

He knew that we would need constant reminders!

The Prophets

In these particular verses, Peter took a look back at the prophets from long ago. They had all studied and looked for the coming Messiah. Here are Peter’s words about the prophets:

“They inquired into what time or what circumstances the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating when he testified in advance to the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. 12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven – angels long to catch a glimpse of these things.” I Peter 1:12-13

As it would be, those prophets would not be living here on earth when Jesus came to live amongst men. However, they made a point to pass their knowledge down to the future generations. It was very important to them that the future generations recognize Him.

My Father-in-Law and His Spiritual Legacy

Two smiling men sit at a table in a casual restaurant with wooden walls decorated with signs and memorabilia, sharing a meal and laughter as they reflect on their spiritual legacy. One wears glasses and an orange shirt; the other, in gray, also wears glasses.

I got to witness Jay’s dad live the Bible as best as he could. He was constantly reading the Word, and he shared it in his words and actions with the people he came in contact with.

I cannot hear John 14:1-6 without thinking about him.

Text from John 14:1-6 appears on a beige, textured background with faint sparkles, reflecting a spiritual legacy of belief in God and Jesus, who prepares a place and is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

I do not know how many times I heard Jay’s dad quote this entire passage. It was very important to him and he wanted everyone he knew to “get it.”

Amazingly enough, when his memory was taken by Dementia, he could still quote these verses. I made a point to record him reciting these passages when it seemed like that was all he could remember.

Close to the end of his earthly life, he lost those verses as well, but we had the recordings and actually played a clip of it at his funeral.

What a spiritual legacy with a great message to pass along!

What Kind of Spiritual Legacy are You Leaving?

  • Are there certain verses or stories that make your family think of you when they hear them?
  • What messages do you want your family and loved ones to remember after you are gone?
  • Are you sharing those messages with them regularly?
  • What will your spiritual legacy be?

I have a long way to go, but at least being aware of it is the first step.

This is where I take notes in Bibles that I will eventually gift to my grandchildren one day (graduation). It is one way of passing down a spiritual legacy.

These are a few of the Bible study resources that I use for myself as well as while I am studying in the Bibles for the girls.
