Chicken in Its Own Gravy Recipe (Easy Comfort Food)
Some recipes have more than just flavor. They carry stories, memories, laughter, and sometimes even a little bit of legacy. This Chicken in Its Own Gravy recipe is one of those treasures.

I got this recipe many years ago from an old church cookbook. It quickly became one of our favorite meals, and it comes with a funny story that always brings us a little laugh.
I reached out to Debbie Driggers, the lady who shared the recipe so many years ago, and found that there was another story with this recipe. She told me it was actually her mother’s recipe. It was the very one she made when she won Mrs. Hunt County at our local fair.
That alone tells you that it’s a good one.

There’s something about simple, baked dishes that just feel like home.
- True Comfort Food – This recipe creates a rich, savory delicious gravy as it bakes, so there are no complicated steps required.
- Simple Ingredients – Most of what you need is probably already in your pantry.
- Family-Tested (and Kid Approved!) – When our kids were little, this was one of those meals they requested.
- Baked – Not Fried – I love the taste of fried food, but I do not enjoy frying. This recipe is baked, so you do not have the mess of frying.
A Recipe with a Story and a Legacy
This recipe has a couple of stories that make it even better.
The Original Story

The original contributor from the church cookbook, Debbie Driggers, graciously gave me permission to share it and told me it actually came from her mother.
Her mother made this very dish for the judges at the Hunt County Fair when she ran for Mrs. Hunt County, and she won. I was not aware of this story. That makes this recipe feel like a little piece of local history.
A Funny Family Memory – When the Missionaries Came to Visit
When the kids were young, several missionaries came to speak at our church, and different homes signed up to feed them. This was a little out of our comfort zone, but we were excited to get to serve in this way.
I decided I would make Chicken in it’s Own Gravy, because we all loved it. We were all visiting and enjoying the meal, and our son decided to get a second helping. Before I could stop him, he took his fork and scraped the serving spoon to get every last bit of the delicious gravy on his plate. 🙂
Yes – right there at the table! I jumped up and got another serving spoon before he could put that one back into the dish!
It was one of those pretty embarrassing moments as a mom, but everyone got a kick out of it. Jacob had no idea that he had even done anything wrong. Since that time, we have had lots of laughs about that story. In fact, I can’t even think about this recipe without that event coming to mind.

Detailed Instructions
You can leave the chicken as whole chicken breasts. I cut them into strips this last time since I was only cooking for two.

Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425 degrees. While it is preheating, grease a 9X13 baking dish and pour the melted butter into it.
- Coat the chicken with flour and season with salt and pepper. Arrange the chicken down in the melted butter in a single layer.
- Bake uncovered for 30 minutes at 425. Turn the chicken over, and bake until brown (15 – 20 minutes longer).
- Remove from the oven; reduce the temperature to 325 degrees.
- Combine the evaporated milk, Velveeta cheese, cream of mushroom soup, and onions. Pour over chicken. ( I usually put these ingredients in a medium pan and heat until melted, but you do not have to.)
- Cover the baking dish with foil and return to the oven to bake 15 – 20 minutes. Cooking time may vary according to your oven.
- Serve warm and don’t forget to spoon extra gravy over the servings.
The end result will be a creamy gravy over very tender chicken. We love it best served over rice.
Tips for Making the Best Chicken in its Own Gravy
- Don’t stir while baking. This helps the creamy chicken gravy form properly.
- I prefer boneless skinless chicken breasts because I like white meat, but you can use chicken thighs or bone-in chicken if you want.
- Let it rest a few minutes before serving to thicken.

This dish goes well with almost any sides to make a complete meal. These are a few of our favorites:
- Mashed or roast potatoes
- Rice
