How to Make Foil Packet Meals

Foil packet meals are one of those tried-and-true dinner ideas that never go out of style.

Shrimp, sliced sausage, corn on the cob, and chopped green peppers seasoned with black pepper and cooked together in a foil packet—a classic Apron Strings recipe for easy, flavorful meals.

We have had these many times, and they are always a big hit at the table.

Ingredients You Can Use

One of the best things about foil packets is how flexible they are. You can mix and match based on what you have on hand. You can also set everything out like a buffet and let everyone make their own foil packets.

Tip: Be sure to cut everything into bite-size chunks so it cooks evenly.

    Detailed Instructions

Putting the foil packets together is an easy process. It works great if you lay it all out like you are working on an assembly line.

A sheet of aluminum foil holds cut potatoes, corn, sausage, onions, and a pat of butter—all sprinkled with seasoning. The foil sits on a counter near a white ceramic dish and an Apron Strings dog figurine.

    Instructions

    1. Preheat your oven to 400°F.
    2. Assemble the packets: Lay out pieces of aluminum foil and add your ingredients of choice. Each person can build their own packet, which makes this meal especially fun and practical for families.
    3. Drizzle and season each packet with: olive oil, salt & pepper, Old Bay Seasoning, any other seasoning of choice. I am very generous with the Old Bay Seasoning! I think this gives the best flavor to these meals.
    4. Top each packet with 1 pat of butter for extra flavor.
    5. Seal the packets: Fold the aluminum foil tightly around the ingredients to seal everything inside. There have been times that my packets were a little too large and I had to cover and seal the top with another piece of foil.
    6. Bake: Place the foil packets on a baking sheet and bake for 30-40 minutes, or until everything is cooked through and tender. When the time is complete, check the meat and potatoes to make sure they are cooked well.

    Helpful Tips

Apron Strings bring you a foil packet filled with cooked corn on the cob slices, shrimp, small potatoes, and sausage, all seasoned and baked in a rich buttery sauce.
    • Cut Ingredients Evenly – This helps everything cook at the same rate.
    • Don’t overfill the pieces of foil – Keep the packets manageable so they cook evenly. (This seems to be my downfall.)
    • Seal tightly – This locks in moisture and gives everything so much flavor.
    • Check for doneness – Especially if you are using chicken, make sure it is fully cooked before serving. You may want to use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. The potatoes may take a little longer to get tender, depending on the type and size of potatoes.

    FAQs for Foil Packet Dinners

Can I cook foil packets on the grill instead of the oven?

Yes! Place them on a medium heat grill and cook for about 25–35 minutes, turning occasionally.

How do I know when the foil packets are done?

Carefully open one packet and check that the meat is fully cooked and the vegetables are tender.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes, you can assemble the foil packets a few hours in advance and keep them in the refrigerator until you are ready to bake them.

What is the best foil to use?

Heavy-duty foil works best to prevent tearing and leaking. I prefer the foil sheets because of the added convenience.

    Can I make these low-carb?

Definitely! Just omit the potatoes and corn and add more low-carb vegetables like zucchini, squash, and peppers.
