Recently, I discovered how much fun it can be to use AI (artificial intelligence) to transform ordinary dog photos into charming vintage-style artwork that looks beautiful framed around the house.

What surprised me most was how easy the process was and how adorable the finished pictures were once they were hanging in our home.
For all of the pet lovers who have ever wanted a custom pet portrait without spending hundreds of dollars, this simple project may become one of your favorite ideas.

How My AI Dog Portraits Came About
I love taking pictures of my dogs – my phone is filled with dog pictures! However, I had never really thought about framing any of them until recently.
I honestly cannot remember where I saw this, but someone took pictures of their dogs while they were outside using the bathroom, framed them, and hung them in their bathroom. They were so cute. As much as I wanted to do this, (I know this sounds ridiculous) I felt like I would be exploiting my sweet little fur babies. 🙂
Then I remembered all of the cartoon pictures I had made using AI. I knew this would be the perfect solution, and the options would be endless. Instead of having pictures of them using the bathroom, I chose to have them taking a bubble bath. I thought they would appreciate that more.
This is how they turned out:

I fell in love with these pet images! See them framed and hanging in the hall bathroom below.
Why AI Pet Portraits Have Become So Popular
Custom pet portraits have always been around, but traditional artwork can often cost a fortune! AI tools now allow pet owners to create beautiful, personalized artwork in minutes.
What I love most about these portraits is that they feel so personal. They can match your home décor style while also celebrating a pet that is really part of the family.
Whether your style is farmhouse, cottage, vintage, rustic, modern, or traditional, AI can help create artwork that looks surprisingly beautiful framed on a wall or sitting on a shelf.
What Kind of Photos Work Best
Choose Bright, Clear Photos
The best AI portraits usually begin with:
- Natural lighting
- A clear view of your pet’s face
- Sharp images (High-resolution images are best.)
- Photos without cluttered backgrounds
You probably have lots of photos of your pet on your phone – simple phone pictures usually work great. The pictures I used were taken from my phone, and they worked beautifully!
Capture Your Dog’s Personality
Some of my favorite portraits come from pictures that show personality. Use pictures that show:
- Curious facial expressions
- Tilted heads
- Relaxed poses
- Playful moments
- Sad puppy dog eyes
- Your pet’s unique features
The more personality your original photo has, the more charming the finished artwork often becomes.
One more thing to consider is the “pose” of the dog in the picture. Think about what you want the final outcome to be and if your dog is sitting up, lying down, or even standing up. The correct position in the photo can make a big difference in the final outcome.
What You’ll Need for Creating AI Pet Portraits
What is so great about this project is that you do not need a lot of supplies. You can make these as fancy as you want, but you basically only need these items:

- Copy Paper or Photo Paper for Printers – I used what I had, which was just regular copy paper. For best results, use something with a matte finish.
- A Color Printer (If you don’t have one of these, you can use a printing service like Staples, Walmart, or even Canva.)
- Picture Frames that fit your décor – I found these frames on Amazon, and they were delivered the next day. They are just plastic but look like wood and are very inexpensive. They are nothing fancy, but they worked great for this project.

Step-by-Step: How to Create AI Dog Portraits
Step 1: Decide What Kind of Picture You Want of Your Dog
I have created several AI dog portraits in the past without intentions of framing or displaying them. Most of them were just making a photo I had look like a cartoon or watercolor. Decide what you want:
- A photo just as it is but in a different style
- Certain themes for different rooms (kitchen, bathroom, library, etc.)
- Your dog doing something totally different than what is in the photo
- Background changes
- Change the colors in the photo to match your décor
The options are endless. Just get creative and decide on exactly what you want AI to do to the picture.
Step 2: Upload Your Pet’s Photo
Begin with a favorite picture of your dog. Most AI image generators allow you to upload an image and then describe how you want it transformed.
Obviously, these do not have to be dogs. You could add cat photos, a bird, guinea pig, or whatever. You can make a unique portrait with all types of pets.
Once you get started, you will want to upload photos of all of your pets, kids, grandkids, outdoor areas, and on and on. (I haven’t been that successful with people.)
Step 3: Describe the Artistic Styles You Want
This is where the fun and creativity begins! There are a variety of styles to choose – just decide what you want.
Over time and a lot of trial and error, I have found that the more details you can put in what you tell AI (the prompt), the better off you will be. I don’t know how many times I thought I was being very specific about what I wanted, until I saw the picture.
I used this prompt: “Can you do one more picture, just like this but with only the tall dog in the picture?” (In my mind, I meant another picture just like the one of Gizmo in the bathtub but with only Ally alone.) This is what I got. 🙂

I had to go back and tell it to make another picture with this dog in the same bathtub and background as the other picture,
It is very literal. Don’t worry about that though, because you can always tell it to redo the picture with new details. It is very forgiving!
Try prompts using phrases like:
- “Vintage watercolor dog portrait”
- “Storybook-style dog in a bubble bath”
- “Cozy cottagecore pet portrait”
- “Classic oil painting of my golden retriever”
- “Soft pastel watercolor dog portrait”
The prompt I used for my pictures was, “Please make a Beatrix Potter style picture of this dog sitting in a bubble bath.”
I had to make multiple changes after this one – it was too generic. The more descriptive you are, the better the results usually become.
Tip: Experiment with different styles and prompts. When you find your own custom prompts and styles, save them. You may want to use them for friends and family later.
Step 4: Generate Multiple Versions
One of the best parts of AI artwork is being able to create several versions until you find the perfect one.
Sometimes the first image is beautiful, and sometimes the fifth one is even better. Do not be afraid to experiment.
Here was my process of prompts and versions:
Prompt: Please make a Beatrix potter style picture of this dog sitting in a bubble bath.
Picture:

Outcome:

Alteration #1: Can you take this picture and change the wall color to a soft blue?

Alteration #2: Can you leave the floor the original tan color?

In the meantime, I did one of Gizmo and got the cutest picture. I put a new image of Ally in and asked it to make one like it with her.

Alteration #3: Can you do another picture just like this one but with this dog?

Alteration #4: Her body looks too chunky. Can you slim her up a little?

This is the final result. I really liked this one, so I stopped here.
Tip: Don’t be afraid to try different photos. You want your pet’s portrait to be perfect in your eyes!
Step 5: Print and Frame Your Favorite Portrait
Once you find a version you love:

- Download the image. (I have found: “right click, save as” to be the easiest for me.)
- Send it to your home computer or upload it to a photo printing service.
- Print on matte photo paper, canvas, or even regular copy paper.
- Frame it for your home.

Creative Ways to Use AI Pet Portraits

- Entryways
- Living Rooms
- Bathrooms
Make Meaningful Gifts
These portraits also make thoughtful gifts for:
- Dog lovers
- Grandparents

- Friends who recently lost a pet
Use Seasonal Portraits
You can even create:
- Christmas portraits
- Easter portraits
- Fall-themed portraits
- Birthday portraits
This makes decorating extra fun throughout the year, and you can even make different holiday cards.
Is it Ethical to Use AI for Pet Portraits
This is a question many people ask, and I think it is a good one.
Using AI to create personal artwork from your own pet photos for your home is generally considered perfectly acceptable. The important thing is honesty and transparency.
I personally think of AI as a creative tool, kind of like photo editing or digital design software. It allows people to create beautiful keepsakes in a simple and very affordable way.
Tips for Getting Better AI Portrait Results
Be Specific With Descriptions
Instead of saying: “Cute dog painting”
Try: “Soft watercolor portrait of a fluffy white dog sitting in a vintage clawfoot bathtub with cozy cottage décor”
Specific details create stronger images. It also saves you time and frustration of having to get it altered over and over.
Try Multiple Styles
You may be surprised which styles you end up loving most.
Experiment with:
- Beatrix Potter inspired storybook looks
- Rustic farmhouse art
- Oil painting styles
- Soft watercolor illustrations
Keep Original Photos Saved
Always keep your original images so you can generate new versions later.
Affordable Home Decor on a Budget
One thing I love most about this project is how budget-friendly it is.

Instead of spending $200–$500 on custom artwork, you can often create and print beautiful portraits for a fraction of the price.
It is a meaningful way to personalize your home without overspending.

Short Faith Reflection – Celebrating the Gifts God Gives Us
One of the sweetest gifts God gives us is companionship. A furry friend has a special way of bringing comfort, loyalty, joy, and unconditional love into our homes.
These portraits may seem simple, but they also serve as reminders of the little blessings woven throughout everyday life: the wagging tails, loyal companionship, and excited greetings waiting at the door.

Final Thoughts
Our homes tell stories about the people, pets, and the times we treasure most. Sometimes those stories include four-legged family members who bring joy, comfort, laughter, loyalty, and companionship to us every day.
Creating AI pet portraits has become such a fun way to celebrate our fur babies while adding warmth, personality, and fun to our home décor. Whether you frame one special portrait or create an entire gallery wall, these little pieces of artwork can become treasured pieces for years to come.
If you try this out, I would love to see your fur babies in print! Please share them in the comments or email them.
