Granny’s Pink Salad Recipe: Easy Southern Pink Fluff Salad

There are some recipes that instantly take us back to family gatherings, church potlucks, and holiday meals. Granny’s Pink Salad is one of those treasured recipes for me. Growing up, I always looked forward to seeing that pretty pink bowl sitting on her kitchen table. It was such a sweet salad with a great texture that was more of a dessert than a salad.

The only problem? I never got Granny’s original recipe.

A glass dish filled with creamy Pink Salad sits on a checkered cloth. A fork holds up a scoop of the sweet, nostalgic treat. Text reads: "Granny's Pink Salad" at the top and "www.homewithgraceandjoy.com" at the bottom.

Over the years, I’ve tried to recreate the pink strawberry fluff salad I remember from from so long ago, and I think this version comes pretty close. Made with Cool Whip, cottage cheese, pineapple, Jello, and pecans, this simple dessert salad comes together in just a few minutes.

Why You’ll Love This Vintage Pink Salad

If you’ve ever attended a church potluck in the South, chances are you’ve seen a version of pink salad on the dessert table. There are many variations of this dessert we call a salad. Some of them have sweetened condensed milk and cherry pie filling, while others have less sugar.

A glass plate holds a round, pink, creamy dessert with a textured surface and small berry pieces—one of our favorite potluck recipes—placed on a light brown wood-grain countertop.

They have been called pink fluff salad, pink stuff, or strawberry fluff salad, and they have all stood the test of time for good reason.

Memories of Granny’s Pink Salad

One of my favorite things about old family recipes is the memories that are attached to them. While I never managed to get Granny’s exact recipe before she passed, I can still remember the flavor and texture of her pink salad. It was different, because it had cottage cheese in it, giving it a little more texture.

Family recipes are more than a list of ingredients, they tell stories. They remind us of holiday dinners, special celebrations, and loved ones gathered around the table. Every time I make this pink salad, I think about Granny and the many meals we shared at her kitchen table.

Easy Instructions

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the Cool Whip, dry Jello mix, drained crushed pineapple, cottage cheese, and chopped pecans.
  2. Stir well until the dry Jello is fully incorporated and the mixture turns completely pink.
  3. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.
  4. Serve chilled and enjoy.

Tips for Making the Best Pink Salad

  • Drain the pineapple well – Too much liquid can make the salad runny. Be sure to drain the pineapple thoroughly before adding it to the mixture.
  • Choose your favorite Jello flavor – Both cherry and strawberry gelatin work wonderfully in this fluff recipe. Strawberry gives a lighter berry flavor while cherry offers a slightly richer taste. You could even change it up and use lime, grape, or orange Jello – whatever your favorite flavor happens to be.

Variations to Try

  • Add miniature marshmallows – For extra sweetness and texture, stir in one cup of miniature marshmallows.
  • Include fruit – A handful of chopped maraschino cherries, fruit cocktail, or mandarin oranges adds extra color and flavor.
  • Use walnuts instead of pecans – If you prefer walnuts, they make a delicious substitute.

  1. My grandma always made this dessert too Susan, only hers was green. I thought she was the only one who made it when I was growing up.
