Apron Strings & Blessings Weekly Newsletter Vol. 49

Happy Monday and thanks for joining me for this week’s, “Apron Strings & Blessings.” Let’s take a look at a few things faith, family, and home!

A banner featuring "Apron Strings & Blessings - Tying Faith, Family, and Home Together One Blessing at a Time" with a circular "Home with Grace and Joy" logo. Celebrate the strength of apron strings at www.homewithgraceandjoy.com.

How was your 4th of July? If you are from the US, how did you celebrate our country’s 250th birthday?

Bright fireworks burst in the night sky, emitting golden sparks and a trail of smoke above silhouettes of trees, apron strings fluttering on a nearby clothesline and a TV antenna. Faint clouds are illuminated by the vibrant display.

We always experience both sides of celebrating with fireworks here. Our house is pretty close to a fireworks store that allows people to “park and pop.” We can see some pretty nice displays right from our own yard. They are constant for several days!

A person relaxes in a backyard pool at night, illuminated by string lights like glowing apron strings. Fireworks burst in the cloudy sky above, and a white pool float drifts nearby. Trees and a lounge chair are visible on the wooden deck.

This year, we all stayed in the backyard, and fireworks were literally in every direction. Our neighbors gave a great show. You can see one of the beauties here above my cypress tree.

A burst of colorful fireworks lights up the night sky above a dark silhouette of a tree, with red, yellow, and white sparks radiating outward like apron strings unfurling in a dazzling display.

We always used to tease Jacob about being a pyromaniac – he loved fireworks! He even built some himself and almost burned down the neighborhood! 🙂 I wish I had a picture of all the neighbors working together to put out the grass/yard fire!

We have never really felt the need to buy fireworks, but every year since he passed, we have gotten one big one and set it off in his name. That’s the only one I enjoy actually doing.

The downside to being surrounded by fireworks is that the fur babies are terrified! We have tried just about everything, and finally had to resort to medication. It is really sad!

Here’s the crazy thing! Ally wasn’t scared of noises at all until after she got sprayed by a skunk! That doesn’t even make sense! I am sure there is more to it, but the timing matches up. It is very odd.

I hope your freedom celebration was great! We have so much to celebrate and be thankful for.

Saturday’s Post – Lessons from the Little Red Hen

I took a break this weekend, so this is an older post. The bread recipe in it is amazing!

Five adult hens of various colors and two yellow chicks eat feed from the ground in a coop. The text reads: "Lessons from The Little Red Hen" and "www.homewithgraceandjoy.com".

Jacob’s Funny Mission Trip Mishap

When I write in what I am now calling the girls’ “Legacy Bibles,” I usually add in notes, insights, other scriptures that correspond with what I am reading, and other related things. Ever so often, there is a story that has to be told, and last week there was one for Evelyn.

A young man in a red T-shirt and cap smiles while sitting in a bumper car with a young girl, her face hidden by a heart emoji. Apron Strings of fun connect them as other people and colorful decorations fill the background.

She likes to ask questions about her daddy, and we are always happy to share with her. One day she will read this story when she is in Luke chapter 10. Jesus was giving directions to His disciples and followers before sending them out to minister. Part of those instructions were:

“When you enter any town, and they welcome you, eat the things set before you.” Luke 10:8

When Jacob was 16, he and Jay went on a mission trip to Guatemala. This was the philosophy the mission team adopted – they would eat whatever they were served. All was good until they served flan! 🙂

As hard as Jacob tried, he couldn’t get it down without gagging. He asked for Jay’s help, but Jay couldn’t do it. All of this time, I thought Jay ate it for him, but he clearly told me this week that he did NOT!

I added that story to Evelyn’s Bible and then made this little clip.

An open Bible rests on a wooden surface, its margins filled with handwritten notes in blue and black ink. Apron strings peek out beside a fabric bookmark and some decorative objects, adding a touch of homely comfort to the scene.

June’s Scripture

A beige and white checkered background with a quote in the center: "How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!" Psalm 119:103. Like a Pink Salad, it's both comforting and delightful. www.homewithgraceandjoy.com at the bottom.

YouTube Scriptures

I love this crazy girl! She has calmed down some, but look at her energy in this clip! She’s about to get started! 🙂

A light brown and white dog with pointed ears lies on green grass, facing away from the camera and looking toward the distance, as if longing for freedom beyond its apron strings.

You can’t watch this without smiling!

This Week’s Post – How to Preserve and Pass Down Your Family History

Don’t Let Your Family’s Stories Be Forgotten. There are several new treasured heirlooms in this post.

A booklet titled "Granny's Treasures" rests on a lace-trimmed cloth, with a candle and greenery beside it. The text above shares how to preserve and pass down your family history for future generations.

What not to buy – I mentioned last week that I ordered something that I wanted to share with you. I just wanted to make sure it was a good deal. It was not! In fact, it is going back this week.

A hand holding a grey and white plastic ice mold with a grid pattern, positioned over a stainless steel sink faucet, evokes memories of home and the comfort of apron strings.

I will go ahead and show you what it was – a cup that makes small little ice cubes. I was going to use it to make coffee ice cubes, but I never tried with coffee. It turned out to be a lot of work for a small amount of ice.
