Even Seaweed Has a Purpose: Finding God’s Plan in the Unexpected at Navarre Beach

Even seaweed has a purpose. I’ll admit, that’s not something I ever expected to say after a beach vacation. 

Before our recent trip to beautiful Navarre Beach, I watched a short reel explaining the benefits of seaweed (often called Sargassum), and the benefits of June Grass that washes ashore along the Gulf Coast each summer. Like many vacationers, I’ve always seen it as an annoyance that gets in the way of enjoying the crystal-clear water. 

As I watched the video, I realized God had even created this often-overlooked part of nature for an important reason. That simple thought stayed with me throughout our vacation and became a beautiful reminder that if God gives seaweed a purpose, He certainly has a purpose for each one of us.

Our Week at Navarre Beach

Every year I look forward to our beach vacation. It is one of my favorite places to slow down, spend time with the Lord and the family, and admire God’s beautiful creation.

Like many people heading to Florida’s Gulf Coast during early summer, I was hoping to avoid June grass and all signs of seaweed. Before we left home, I saw reports that seaweed was beginning to arrive all along parts of the coast. I was definitely hoping we would miss it.

To our surprise, our section of Navarre Beach remained beautiful all week. The water stayed clear, and we enjoyed swimming, walking the shore, reading on the beach, and soaking in the peaceful beauty all around us.

Meanwhile, almost all of the nearby beaches were experiencing huge amounts of seaweed; it even made the news! Visitors were leaving those beaches and driving elsewhere looking for clearer water.

The amazing part – The very next week when we were back home, our beach experienced what the others had dealt with. Seaweed washed onto the shore in large amounts, and storms even moved into the area. The timing of our beach vacation couldn’t have been better!

As thankful as I was for our beautiful week, God showed me that the seaweed (that I was so happy to avoid) wasn’t created by mistake.

Why Does Seaweed Come Ashore?

After seeing Carleyonthecoast’s reel, I knew there was more to the seaweed than I ever realized.

I did a little more research (thank you ChatGPT) and found several benefits of seaweed.

It Protects the Coast

Seaweed acts like a barrier to fight against erosion on the shoreline. It helps strengthen sand dunes, slows the effects of waves, and protects beaches from being washed away during storms.

Without it, many of the coastlines would erode much more quickly. Who knew?

It Feeds the Marine Life

Seaweed provides food for:

• Birds – Last year I was so fascinated with the sanderlings!
• Sea turtles
• Fish
• Crabs
• Shrimp
• Tiny marine organisms

Many little creatures depend on it for their survival.

It Provides Shelter

Young fish and small little sea creatures hide in the seaweed to escape predators. What may look like a messy pile of ickiness to us may actually be a safe haven for marine life. 

That does make me a little more cautious though when it comes to walking through the seaweed to get out into the ocean. 🙂

It Returns Nutrients to the Beach

As seaweed naturally breaks down, it returns valuable nutrients to the sand. These nutrients nourish the plants, and their roots are the ones that help protect beaches from erosion.

Leave it to the Lord to make all of this work together so beautifully!

It Supports the Entire Marine Ecosystem

Here are just a few of the basic ways seaweed helps maintain healthy oceans. It:

• Produces oxygen.
• Captures carbon dioxide.
• Feeds microorganisms that keep coastal ecosystems balanced.

There were many other purposes for seaweed, but it got pretty scientific. 

What many beach-goers (myself included) view as a nuisance is actually an important part of God’s design.

It Can Bring Out the Silliness in People

I am not sure if you would really call this a “purpose,” but seaweed has a way of bringing out silly, playful actions in our family.

When the kids were in their pre-teen/teenage years, Jacob teased his sister with seaweed. She nearly lost her mind! 🙂

On our latest beach trip, his daughter did the same thing!

Jay can always find a way to have fun, even with seaweed to the face.

Even Seaweed has a Purpose

As I stood on that beautiful shoreline throughout the week, I couldn’t help but think about people. Have you ever wondered if your life really matters? I think we all have at some point.

Maybe you are:

• Raising children that don’t seem to notice your sacrifices.
• Caring for aging parents.
• Faithfully serving at church without recognition.
• Working a job that feels ordinary.
• In a season where you wonder why God has you where you are.

It’s easy to believe that we’re insignificant when no one notices.

Seaweed probably isn’t admired by many beachgoers; most people just complain and wish it would go away. However, God created it with an important purpose.

If God intentionally designed something as simple as seaweed to care for His creation, imagine how intentionally He created us!

Ephesians 2:10 reminds us:

God doesn’t create without a purpose: Not seaweed – Not seashells – Not birds – Not us.

Sometimes We Don’t See the Purpose

The thing that is so interesting to me about seaweed is that most of its work happens where we don’t see it. Until just recently, I didn’t really know it had much of a purpose, if any.

It quietly protects beaches, shelters sea life, feeds God’s creatures, strengthens the shoreline, and more. 

It gets lots of complaints and little applause or recognition. However, it still keeps doing its job – fulfilling its God-given purpose.

So many times, we spend our lives doing things that we think are unimportant and unnoticed. We:

• Prepare meals.
• Pray for our families.
• Serve behind the scenes.
• Encourage others.
• Teach children.
• Check on neighbors.
• Love difficult people.

All of these things may seem like little things and maybe even unnoticed, but God sees every one of them.

They may seem like ordinary tasks to us, but they may be doing extraordinary things in His kingdom. He can take a little and do miracles with it – just ask the boy with a few fish and loaves of bread.

Trust God’s Timing

Looking back, I know our clear beach wasn’t something we had any control over. The Lord just blessed us with wonderful timing.

The following week (which we had contemplated going) looked completely different – lots of seaweed and storms! They even closed the beach for a few days.

Sometimes God allows us to experience seasons of calm, and then other times we may have to walk through storms. Neither of those situations change His purpose for our lives.

Just as the seaweed arrived exactly when nature needed it, God places each of us exactly where He wants us. His timing is always perfect, even when we don’t understand it.

I will admit that I’m still not hoping to see seaweed floating all over the beach on our next vacation. But now every time I see it, I’ll try to remember that:

• Even the things we don’t particularly enjoy can still have great value in God’s creation.
• If God designed seaweed with a purpose, then He certainly designed us with a purpose too.

I want to encourage you! If you feel unnoticed, that your work doesn’t matter, and wonder if your life is making a difference, know that it is.

The God who designed every grain of sand and every single piece of seaweed also designed you. Your purpose may not always be obvious, but it is always real.

Trust Him. He never creates anything without a reason.
