How to Build the Perfect Church Potluck Menu
One reason church potlucks work so well is the variety – there is usually something for everyone.

In my experience, when having an informal potluck, it usually always works out without having to do a sign-up. There was one time that several people brought fried chicken, and we only had a few sides, but we were flexible and decided we were having a chicken themed potluck! 🙂

Tips for Taking a Dish to a Church Potluck
- Think of Recipes that are Easy to Serve – If people have to assemble something, there will be a back-up in the serving line. The easiest dishes for serving that I have seen at a potluck are dishes where the people can get a serving and move on down the line.
- Choose Recipes That Travel Well –
- Look for dishes that can easily be transported without making a mess, losing their flavor or presentation.
- Place your dish or dishes on a boot tray for easy travel. If something happens to spill over, it will go onto the boot tray instead of your vehicle.
- Prepare What You Can Ahead of Time – Recipes that can be assembled the day before make serving much less stressful.
- Bring Serving Utensils – Most churches have plenty of serving utensils, but if you are going to a smaller potluck, don’t forget a serving spoon.
- Label Your Dish
- If your recipe contains common allergens such as nuts, dairy, or gluten, adding a simple label can be very helpful for everyone.
- If you are going to be at a larger potluck gathering, it is also very helpful to put an address label on the bottom of your dish. This is a great use of all the labels you get in the mail.
Themed Potluck Dinner Ideas
On occasion it is fun to have a themed potluck dinner. The options are almost endless, but here are a few ideas:
- Taco or Nacho Bar
- Baked Potato Bar
- BBQ
- Salad Luncheon
- Sandwiches
- Finger Foods
- Breakfast Potluck
- Soup or Chili Night – Have the bowls ready for a great variety of soups and chilis!
- Pasta Dinner
- We had a Chicken Pot Pie potluck at a church once, and it was great! I had no idea there were so many varieties of chicken pot pie.
If you decide to have a themed potluck, I would definitely have a sign-up sheet. You will need items from each category to make it work.
On a side note – Not everyone will get the memo. 🙂 If people show up with things that don’t go with the theme, just go with it. The more the merrier, and it will all be eaten and enjoyed.
