How Buying Meat in Bulk Saves Time, Money, and Stress (Even for a Family of Two)
Have you ever wished dinner was just a little easier at the end of a busy day? One of the simplest changes we’ve made to help with this has been buying meat in bulk. Whether you’re feeding a large family or you’re empty nesters like we are, purchasing meat in larger quantities can save both time and money while making meal planning much less stressful.

Instead of making multiple grocery orders or trips every month or wondering what’s for dinner, we just open the freezer and already have the main ingredient waiting for us. Spending a little extra time organizing everything when we get home pays off for weeks afterward.
Quick Summary
Looking for an easy way to save money on groceries? Buying meat in bulk can reduce grocery costs, eliminate extra shopping trips, simplify meal planning, and make busy weeknights much easier.
Learn how we divide, package, freeze, and organize our meat for weeks of affordable meals, even as a household of just two people.
Why Buying Meat in Bulk Is Worth It
Buying meat in bulk isn’t only for large families. In fact, it has become one of our favorite money-saving habits as empty nesters.

Whether you’re cooking for two or ten, buying larger quantities allows you to:
- Spend less money per pound.
- Reduce grocery shopping trips.
- Save time throughout the month.
- Make meal planning easier.
- Always have dinner ingredients on hand.
- Reduce impulse purchases at the grocery store.
Instead of wondering what to cook every evening, you’ve already done the hardest part.
How Buying Meat in Bulk Saves Time
One of the biggest benefits isn’t just saving money, it’s saving time.
Fewer Trips to the Grocery Store
Every grocery trip takes time. Even grocery deliveries and pickup orders require planning, placing the order, driving to the store (pick-ups), and unloading everything at home.
By purchasing meat once every few weeks (or even monthly), you get rid of some of those extra errands.
Meal Planning Becomes Easier
When your freezer is stocked, meal planning is much easier. Instead of asking:
“What do I need to buy?”
Ask yourself:
“What do I want to cook?”
That’s a much easier question to answer.
You can literally look in the freezer and determine what meals you want to have for the week. It is like having a head start.
How Buying Meat in Bulk Saves Money
Buying larger packages of meat usually means paying less per pound. Recently, we purchased:

- 6 pounds of ground beef
- 12 chicken breasts
- 4 filet steaks
- 1 large salmon
- 9 thick-cut boneless pork chops
The total came to $162.60.
For our family of two, that works out to at least 20 different meals, making each meal approximately $8.13 for the both of us.
When you think about it, many fast food meals cost more than that for one person. That is a huge savings.
Plus, because everything is already in the freezer, we’re less tempted to eat out on busy evenings.
How We Divide and Freeze Our Meat
Less than an hour of preparation gives us weeks of easy meals.
Salmon
We cut the salmon into two equal portions.

- Label the freezer bag.
- Place each portion into a freezer bag.
- Lay it flat in the freezer for easier storage and quicker thawing.
Pork Chops and Filet Steaks
We divide these into serving-size portions. For us, that is:

- Two pork chops per freezer bag
- Two filet steaks per freezer bag
That way, we only thaw exactly what we need.
Tip: If possible, leave space between the pieces of meat in each freezer bag. This allows them to thaw faster. It also allows you to remove one of them if you don’t want to cook them both. If they are frozen together, you can’t really use one without thawing them both.
Chicken Breasts (or Other Pieces)
Our chicken comes packaged as:
- Six individual packages
- Two chicken breasts in each package
The packages are attached together when purchased. Before freezing, we now separate all six packages.

If you leave them connected, they’ll freeze into one large block that can be difficult to separate later. (You can see in the picture that I had to learn this the hard way!) Taking a couple of minutes to divide them before freezing saves frustration later.
Ground Beef
We’ve used vacuum sealers before, but honestly, we’ve found freezer bags to be quicker and just as convenient. Here’s what we do:

- Divide out the meat by just eyeballing it.
- Use a kitchen scale to measure out the portion size you will use. We keep them in 1 – 1.25 pound packages.
- Label the freezer bags.
- Place the portioned sized ground beef in the freezer bags.
- Flatten them into thin rectangles.
Flattening the meat helps it:
- Freeze faster.
- Stack neatly.
- Thaw much more quickly than a large round package.

This is one of the easiest freezer hacks we’ve found.
Freezer Organization Tips
Label Before Filling
Write on the freezer bag before adding the meat.
It’s much easier than trying to write on a full bag, and many times it is hard to get the ink to get on the baggies once they are cold or have moisture in them.
Information to Add
Always write:
- The contents
- The weight if appropriate (ground meat for sure)
- The date
You’ll always know what you’re using first.
Remove the Extra Air
Press as much air out of each freezer bag as possible before sealing them. When you remove the excess air, it helps reduce freezer burn and keeps the meat fresher longer.
Keep a Freezer Inventory
One thing that has made a big difference for us is keeping a simple freezer inventory. You can use:
- A notebook (This is what I use – nothing fancy!)
- A dry erase board
- A printable freezer inventory sheet
- A note on your phone
Just cross off items when you use them. This makes grocery shopping easier because you’ll know exactly what needs to be replaced.
Additional Tips for Buying Meat in Bulk
- Watch Weekly Sales – Stock up when prices are especially low instead of waiting until you need something.
- Buy What You Actually Eat – Just because something is on sale doesn’t mean it’s a bargain if your family won’t eat it.
- Rotate Older Meat First – Use the oldest packages first to reduce waste.
- Freeze in Meal-Size Portions – Freeze the amount your family typically uses for one meal. Just thaw exactly what you need, and you will waste less food.
Favorite Items for Buying Meat in Bulk

- Gallon Freezer Bags
- Quart Freezer Bags
- Digital Kitchen Scale
- Permanent Markers
- Vacuum Sealer (Ours is no longer available, but this one is similar. We use it for venison and a few other things.)
- Meat Chopper (I am really bad about forgetting to lay the meat out to thaw. This little gadget helps me get ground meat cooked easily when it is not thawed all the way.)

Final Thoughts
Buying meat in bulk is one of the simplest ways to save time, money, and stress, whether you’re feeding a large family or you are empty nesters. With just a little planning and preparation, you can stock your freezer with meal-ready portions, reduce unnecessary trips to the grocery store, simplify your weekly meal planning, and stretch your grocery budget.
These small choices allow us to be good stewards of the resources God has given us. When we manage our time, our finances, and the food He provides wisely, we are better equipped to care for our families, show hospitality to others, and give when opportunities arise. Sometimes faithful stewardship isn’t found in the big decisions, it begins with simple habits that honor the Lord and bring peace to our homes.

“Sometimes faithful stewardship isn’t found in the big decisions; it begins with simple habits that honor the Lord and bring peace to our homes.” Love this so much; I’m putting it in my journal today! We meal prep every week, and it has been such a game changer. But I know we could make things even easier if we prepped at least the meat by the month. Excited to try this! Hugs, CoCo
