How to Cover Your Home with God’s Word: Bible Verses for Every Room

When we built our home in 2001, we wanted to dedicate it to the Lord from the very beginning. We made it a matter of prayer and even prayed over the property before we bought it, but we also decided we would write Scriptures in every room.

Whether you’re building a new home, remodeling an older one, or just looking for creative ways to surround your family with Scripture, this is one tradition I cannot recommend enough.

Filling Our Home with Scripture

We wanted loved ones to contribute to the Scripture writing also, so we placed a bag of Sharpies inside our unfinished house. We invited family members, friends, and our church family to stop by and write their favorite Bible verses on the studs, concrete, and framing throughout the house before a any sheetrock covered the walls.

Wood framing and insulation are visible inside a building under construction, creating a welcoming space to personalize with Bible verses for every room of your house. A window opening shows a red vehicle and debris outside.

I carried around a growing list of Scriptures inside my Bible. Every time I came across another verse that I thought would be great to add to our house, I added it to my list. (I have looked everywhere for that list and can’t find it anywhere!)

Jay and the kids also added verses. The kids especially enjoyed writing Scriptures in their own bedrooms. By the time we finished, our home was literally covered in God’s Word.

A black fireplace insert is installed within a wooden wall frame at a construction site. Insulation is visible on the right, and drywall sheets are stacked nearby—perfect for those considering thoughtful details like adding Bible verses for every room of your house as the building process continues.

Although those verses disappeared behind drywall years ago, we have always known they are still there, hidden inside the walls. When you think about it, those Scriptures have been there through birthdays, family dinners, answered prayers, difficult seasons, and in countless blessings.

Why Write Bible Verses Throughout Your Home?

Writing Scripture throughout your home is such a beautiful way of dedicating every room to the Lord. Even though no one can see the verses hidden behind our walls today, we know they are still there. And who knows, many years from now, someone else may have the house and remodel it – the verses they see may be the exact encouragement they need.

When you think about it, our homes are where:

One verse really stood out to me while we were in this process of writing Scriptures throughout the house – Deuteronomy 6:4-9. These Scriptures remind us that we should make God’s Word a part of our everyday life and share His Word with our families.

Even though this set of Scriptures is a little long, I was determined to write them over every doorway in the house. This is emphasized again in Deuteronomy 11:18-21.

Creative Ways to Hide God’s Word Throughout Your Home

You don’t have to be building a new house to do this, you just have to get a little creative. Here are a few ideas:

During New Construction or Remodeling

Wooden wall framing in a building under construction, showing exposed studs, electrical boxes, and wiring. Sunlight comes through windows in the background, and construction materials are visible outside—an ideal moment to consider incorporating Bible verses for every room of your house as you shape both the structure and spirit of your new home.
  • Write directly on the framing before drywall – Use permanent markers to write Scriptures on the studs and framing before the walls are put up.
  • Place Scripture inside walls before closing them – Write verses on index cards, place them in sealed envelopes, and tuck them behind trim or inside walls.
  • Write over doorways – Many families place verses above every doorway before painting.
  • Beneath flooring during renovations – Write Scriptures on the foundation when getting new flooring.
  • Add Scripture into the brick – This was one of Jay’s only requests when we were building.
A brick house with a black door decorated with a festive wreath greets visitors. A sign near the door reads "WE WILL SERVE THE LORD, JOSHUA 24:15." In front of a window, a red wagon holds yellow flowers, adding to fall ideas. A potted plant rests on the ground nearby.

Ways to Add Scripture Anytime

  • Use glow-in-the-dark clear ink – I have seen people on social media doing this, and it is really cool! Use a clear UV or glow marker to allow Scripture to remain hidden until it is viewed with a UV flashlight.
  • Frame favorite Scriptures – Print your favorite verses on pretty paper or with a nice background and frame them.
An ornate ivory picture frame with gold accents displays a floral print featuring one of the Bible Verses about Love: "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a difficult time." — Proverbs 17:17 (CSB).
  • Beautiful Scripture art – You can purchase Scripture art that reminds you of God’s promises every time you walk past them.
  • Place note cards with your favorite verses above door frames – No one may see them, but you will know they are there.
  • Keep Scriptures in unexpected places – You never know when you may see the verse you need for that very day or moment.
    • Inside kitchen cabinets
    • Under or on the bathroom mirrors
    • Behind family portraits
    • Inside drawers
    • Under tables
    • On the refrigerator door
    • Inside the pantry

Our Favorite Part

Although we only took a handful of pictures of the studs full of Scriptures, we  don’t need photos to remember what is behind these walls. Every room of our home still has the verses we wrote more than twenty-five years ago.

No one can see them, and most visitors don’t even know they’re there. However, every stud and hidden space is a reminder for us that this house was dedicated to the Lord before we moved in.

It is neat to think that those Scriptures have been with us for every visit, birthday, graduation, holiday, sickness, loss, struggle, answered prayer, and even the ordinary days.

If we ever build another house, this will be one tradition we will absolutely do again.

Final Thoughts

Writing Bible verses throughout your home may seem like a small thing to do, but it can be one of the most powerful traditions your family starts. Whether you’re building a new house, remodeling one, or just wanting to add verses to your home as it is, look for creative ways to fill your home with God’s Word.

It has been more than twenty-five years since we wrote those Scriptures on the studs of our home, and they’re still there. They may be out of sight, but they are not forgotten. God’s promises remain.

My prayer is that every room of your home becomes a place where faith grows. I also pray that the generations will always be reminded that “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

  1. Love this collection of scripture!

  2. I love this idea so much, Susan. I did this when I was working on TCG Cottage and feel a sense of peace every time I walk into that space now. I had no idea you would use invisible ink either. That is so cool and would make a fun “new home” gift too! Hugs, CoCo

  3. I have always loved this idea. We did this in a rental house we renovated several years ago, and we are slowly incorporating it into our home as we renovate each room. Your suggested scripture verses are special. This post will be a feature this week. #HomeMattersParty

    1. That is so wonderful! I love the idea of doing this in a rent house! You never know who those Scriptures will affect!
