A Book of Wisdom, Hope, and Love

Every now and then, you read a book that really speaks to your heart and has a great impact on your thoughts. The book that did this for me is The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom, with Elizabeth Sherrill. It has been several years since I first read her story, but certain parts of it still stand out in my mind. Besides the Bible, I have never seen such a book of wisdom, hope, and love!

.

Several years before I read The Hiding Place, Jay read a biography about Corrie ten Boom. He kept going on about her life and what an amazing person she was. Her life story made such an impression on him that when we rescued our next dog, he named him Ten Boom! I didn’t really get it, but I went along with him.

It was several years later when I was looking for my next book to read that I decided I would see why Jay was so taken with her story. It didn’t take me long to see it. Corrie and her family lived in Holland during World War II. They had such a love for God and people that they couldn’t sit by and just watch the terrible events of the Holocaust take place without taking action. They converted their home into a “hiding place” for many Jews, and they suffered many consequences because of their actions of love.

.

Corrie not only tells of her experiences through this horrific time, but she also shares the lessons that she learned because of her experiences. It is a true story of wisdom, hope, and love.

.

As I read The Hiding Place, I saw so many quotes that stood out to me. (I am a quote girl.) I underlined and highlighted like crazy. The story made such an impression on me that when I finished the book, I went back through it and typed up all of the quotes. I literally typed seven pages of quotes and lessons. I want to share just a few of these thought-provoking quotes with you.

.

Wisdom From Corrie ten Boom

.

“But if God has shown us bad times ahead, it’s enough for me that He knows about them.  That’s why He sometimes shows us things, you know – to tell us that this too is in His hands.”

.

“The circle of white cotton told me that when we’re feeling poorest – when we’ve lost a friend, when a dream has failed, when we seem to have nothing left in the world to make life beautiful – that’s when God says, ‘You’re richer than you think.'”

.

“And all the while I had the incredible feeling that it didn’t matter, that this was not my business but God’s.  That all I had to do was walk straight ahead.”

.

Hope From Corrie ten Boom

.

“But as the rest of the world grew stranger, one thing became increasingly clear.  And that was the reason the two of us were here.  Why others should suffer we were not shown.  As for us, from morning until lights-out, whenever we were not in ranks for roll call, our Bible was the center of an ever-widening circle of help and hope.”

.

“We must tell them that there is no pit so deep that He is not deeper still.  They will listen to us, Corrie, because we have been here.” (Betsie)

.

Love From Corrie ten Boom

.

“Corrie, if people can be taught to hate, they can be taught to love!  We must find the way, you and I, no matter how long it takes.” (Betsie)

.

“Every meal I cooked was an offering to him, each shining pot a poem, every sweep of the broom an act of love.”

.

“Mama’s love had always been the kind that acted itself out with a soup pot and sewing basket.  But now that these things were taken away, the love seemed as whole as before.  She sat in her chair at the window and loved us.  She loved the people she saw in the street – and beyond: her love took in the city, the land of Holland, the world.  And so I learned that love is larger than the walls that shut it in.”

I hope some part of Corrie’s story speaks to you. If you have not read The Hiding Place, I highly encourage it! I will put a link below if you want to get a copy. I am going to start a biography about her this week. She is such an inspiration. I am thankful for her life and her book of wisdom, hope, and love.

I always wondered why God let her family be caught helping. Duh! It was so they could bring help and hope in the prisons! Thanks so much for sharing!
