How to Use Your God Given Talents and Skills

How to Use Your God Given Talents and Skills?

I have been reading through the book of Exodus, and I just finished reading about all the details of the building of the tabernacle and the duties that went along with it.  Two men, Bezalel and Oholiab are specifically mentioned.  They were equipped with God given talents and skills to accomplish the Lord’s purposes. Oh the nuggets of Truth in these verses!

Scriptures About Bezalel & Oholiab

“I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability, and knowledge in all kinds of crafts.”  Exodus 31:3

“Also I have given skill to all the craftsmen to make everything I have commanded you.”  Exodus 31:6

The Lord equips us for the things that He calls us to do in life.  You could look at it this way – When He gives us these talents and skills, He allows us to not only make a living using them, but also enjoy them. We also have the privilege of using the same talents and skills for His Kingdom.

Life Lessons

As many of you know, my profession has been education for many years. I do not know how I would have made it through my first year of teaching if other teachers had not used their God given talents and skills to pour into me. They allowed the Lord to use them both in the secular world and in His Kingdom. I bet He has done something similar in your life.

He gives us the skills, abilities, knowledge, and yes, even desires to do all that He asks of us.

Reflection on Your God Given Talents and Skills

Take a look at what you are the best at and enjoy doing. Think about how you can use those talents to minister to others.  Think of all the many skills it takes to run a household and raise a family!  You may be great at cleaning, cooking, gardening, building, organizing, decorating, financial planning, teaching, communicating, sewing, or crafts. The list could go on forever.

You can minister to the people around you in each of the areas mentioned.  There may be an opportunity to minister to people who are sick or the shut-ins at your church.  You may take what you know and use it to help young wives or mothers.  (Read Titus 2:3-5)

Talent and Skills Life Applications

  • We are selected and called by the Lord for specific purposes.
  • God equips us to do the things He wants us to do. He gives us the wisdom and skills we need to accomplish the tasks.
  • Our talents and skills are God given and God driven.
  • Sometimes we tend to use our talents and skills for our purposes only. True happiness and joy come from fulfilling His purposes.
God given talents quote

If you take a look at where your talents lie and what you enjoy, you will be able to find an area of ministry.  Like the verses state, we have God given talents and skills to accomplish His purposes!  Let’s make sure we are doing just that.

  1. God is so good to have given us each our own specific talents to use for His purposes. When I began my blog, a DIY & home decor/homemaking blog, I used the verses about Bezalel and the Proverbs 31 woman who seeks wool and flax and works with willing hands. I used to do posts called Designing Devotion in which I would give a tutorial for making something, like a wreath, or for setting up a vignette. After the tutorial I shared a devotional related to the item made. For example, making a shamROCK garland and building our lives on the Solid Rock. Eventually I changed the name to Crafting with Christ. I haven’t done one in a while and your post has inspired me to get back to doing that. Thanks for the inspiration!

  2. I couldn’t agree more AND Less. I used to find digital stuff confusing, and now I can create content with one hand tied behind. I am sure it is my late life God given Talent/Gift. That said I can sing and love to sing maybe sometimes off tune. I find singing easy, I do it anywhere including in the shower…Is it my God given gift? Not too sure about that! Thus my middle of the road thoughts on this great article I found at the Senior Salon Pit Stop.

  3. Bookmarking this post ASAP, Susan! It’s definitely one that I need to read over and over when doubt sets in or feel that I’m on the wrong path because I’m not seeing the results I expected to see in the time I expected to see them. Thank you for these posts and for always knowing the right thing to say. I’m so glad we found each other! Big hugs, CoCo
